Most indestructible joystick?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has been covered before but which stick is most resistant to breaking or to cause problems after a while.

I'm sure we've all snapped more than a few in our days of playing

For my money, the Wico bat handle stick can't be beat

Slik Stik, Starfighter, and TAC-2 (all by Suncom) are of similar very sturdy construction, though have a couple of minor flaws. A friend of mine did manage to break a Slik Stik once; he actually snapped the ball off the end of the steel rod that goes from the handle into the case. I don't know how he managed to do that. Atari CX-40s are positively fragile by comparison.

Well, I know this is probably heresy, but I've been playing my 2600 for years with a standard Sega Genesis 3-button controller, my personal all time favorite controller.

Anyone know if the Genesis controller works on the 7800 with both buttons supported?

It can with some modifications from what I've heard, unmodified I believe it functions only as a one button stick. It seems like you might also be able to make an adapter that would do the same thing.

If anyone has some step by step instruction on how to do this, that would be great!

Not without modification.

As for my controller of choice, the good ol' CX-40 never did me wrong. I have a couple of Archer joysticks (the kind with the button in the standard position and on the top of the stick), and those have held up very well, also. I have a couple of sticks from Suncom, and those are pretty much indestructible as well.

I'd recommend any of those.

The Amiga Power Stick is the toughest 2600 compatible stick I ever used.

I still can't believe anyone uses those things. :P They become loose almost out of the box and are crap for any kind of twitchy precision.

I think the only 2600 stick I've never found broken, or had break on me is the Wico bat controller. I'm not crazy about using them though. Slik Stiks are nice and responsive, but the plastic tabs inside the base that hold the contacts are prone to breaking. I had a Tac 2 (bought used) for about a year. It was a fantastic joystick, but something broke internally. I don't remember exactly how it broke though. It looked like it had lived a hard life before I got it.

The Wico Boss is different from the bat handle stick right? They also made a ball handle stick. Anyone know if there are internal differences?

I like the Wico because it doesn't seem ready to snap in half like stock Atari sticks but it's not as responsive especially for diagonal movement

The Boss is IIRC black and gray. Its only button is on the stick instead of the base. The bat handle and ball handle are identical aside from the shape of the stick. All 3 of these sticks use leaf springs.

Only the 5000; the 1000 and 3000 are crap.

Other than the real thing, the Wico Bat is my favorite (after I filed off the raised letters that say "top." which have left blisters more than once.)
