scotty #1 Posted June 7, 2007 Anybody here with a Thief (Pacific Novelty) machine? Just got one for $200. the tape unit is missing. I can record the cassette, as I have the sample from Mame, but was it a proprieter tape player, or just an off the shelf job? I thought I read either here or on Usenet someone hacked away and used a cheap MP3 player as well. Any info appreciated.
tillenterprises #2 Posted June 7, 2007 Wow- I thought I was the only one with a Thief! I have a standard auto cassette tape deck rigged up in the machine with the recording of the police banter on one channel (I think the left) and the constant crash noises on the other channel. I think the original machines had an endless loop tape deck playing, but good luck finding one of those- instead you can use a standard car cassette player with auto reverse. Let me know if you need help! My e-mail is [email protected] I can also give you my phone number if you e-mail me.
scotty #3 Posted June 13, 2007 Thanks for the help Till. it shouldn't be too hard to find an auto reverse tape deck at a bone yard somewhere. Am I correct in my assumption that the power cord only sends power to the unit when the game is playing (on a credit, not just powered machine powered on)??? Buyatari #4 Posted June 13, 2007 My buddy just sold his. Are you from Cleveland?
+Random Terrain #5 Posted June 13, 2007 Can I waste your time by saying that this game was one of the first 10 arcade games I ever played? Although I don't like it as much now, I thought it was pretty cool at the time.
Cassidy Nolen #6 Posted June 13, 2007 FTWIW, the older the cassette player, the better. Try to find an auto play one from the 80's or 90s with the two knobs. It will be as simple then as setting the knob volume where you want it and go. If you get a digital/electronic one you may have to turn the unit on and off. Those use the memory 12V lead in a car even if the key is turned off. Clearly your game will not produce 12V off Better not anyway My Thief had the car player wired in and it worked great. If you get a 15 min. tape you can just loop the sound over and over. Most computer programs will do that and you could record off of your PC headphone jack. Just my .25 cents. MattG/Snyper2099 #7 Posted June 30, 2007 My buddy just sold his. Are you from Cleveland? That's IS the machine you're thinking of Adam. This was posted the day after it sold. I was sad to see it go but it looks like it found a good home. It really is a good game.
[d2f]Iggy*SJB #8 Posted July 2, 2007 I *THINK* I played this game back in the day..... On the tape, do the cops keep calling out for "Dispatch!" I can't for the life of me remember what all they were calling them about....but I know that I was responsible for it.(Being the quarter-feeder...heheh)
HerbJones #9 Posted March 10, 2008 (edited) I *THINK* I played this game back in the day..... On the tape, do the cops keep calling out for "Dispatch!" I can't for the life of me remember what all they were calling them about....but I know that I was responsible for it.(Being the quarter-feeder...heheh) I bought a Thief boardset and was going to wire it up to play this game again, except some yeawhoo stripped the ROM's from the board. 1) I have the ROM's from MAME - can someone PLEEEZ tell me what ROM's go in which location? 2) Is this a 2 or 3 board set? I have the relay board (for the tape player control), a CPU board, and a Coprocessor board. Does the Coprocessor board go with Thief, or is it only used in some other Pacific Novelty game? Sidenote - I bought some loop tapes, however the manual mentions an "auto-reversing tape player". I would have to guess the manual is correct and it was this instead of a loop tape. Either way will probably accomplish the same thing though! Thanks guys! Edited March 10, 2008 by HerbJones

Crimefighter #11 Posted March 12, 2008 I see no one has figured out how to rig a CD player in place of the tape player.
HerbJones #12 Posted March 16, 2008 http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10086 jboypacman - is there a link on this page that I am missing, that lists what ROM's go where?
