S1500 #1 Posted June 7, 2007 Lost games of the soviet union VERY interesting. Probably won't be able to play these on MAME any time soon. I just love the clunkiness of some of these games. Man, some of these would be a great addition to my basement. Looking at some of the guts of these games almost confirms any jokes made against the Soviets in regards to their technology back in the day. Vaccum tubes oh my! PressureCooker2600 #2 Posted June 7, 2007 Awesome link! Some of those games look fun. That pool game where the balls are all little faces is creepy but cool.

Reading your post confirms any jokes made against the Americans in regards to their smug superiority over the Soviets. Those aren't vacuum tubes. They are Nixie tubes which are more a like neon light with multiple numerals in one tube. The logic and control for these games is solid state and they do have microprocessors. The tubes are just for display. They don't give dates for these machines, they have a comparable feel to early arcade machines over here. They certainly aren't as primitive as the vacuum tube computers of the post-war era.

They actually have little light-up wires in the shapes of digits. Curious that pinball machines always used seven-segment neon displays rather than Nixies. I wonder how the prices compared.
