NES High Score Club 2nd Season Week #15 - Kid Icarus

We go from the gritty realism of Ikari Warriors to the world of Greek mythology filtered through a Japanese-made, 1980s video game. Yes, it's time to play Kid Icarus!

Post a score and let's get this thing rolling! Please, only games played from the beginning will count: no continuing!

Please post any tips you may have - best tip gets 1 bonus point!

And if anyone has a link to the manual, please post it.

This week's competition ends next Tuesday (June 19) morning at approximately 8:00 am PST.

This week's standings:

394,000 arch_8ngel (+10 pts + 1 pt for best tip)

26,000 LarcenTyler (+8 pts)

18,400 gdement (+6 pts)

10,900 vdub_bobby (+4 pts)

8,500 8th lutz (+2 pts)

You will have to pay very close attention to track your score! You can see your score only when you pause the game, and after you die you won't be able to see your full score. If I remember correctly, the "Score" is your score for the level you are currently on and the "Total" is the score for all previous levels. You can see your "Total" if you continue after dying, but your "Score" will be lost forever. All that to say: it would probably be a good idea to frequently check and remember your score, so that if you suddenly die you will know what your score was. ;)

Game Info

Developed by Nintendo in 1986.

Other platforms: GBA, Wii

Sequels/Spinoffs: Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters (Gameboy - 1991)

Interesting that nothing has ever really been done with this, one of the original hits of the NES.

Tips

There is a video of someone beating it very quickly; if you are stuck or having trouble it might help to check that out. There is also some very helpful information at that link about how to get the upgrades.

(1) Since you only have one life to live in this game, be sure and take time to build up enough hearts to buy a barrel and bottles at the first shop you'll come to!

(2) In order to receive power increases (extra arrow icons) you have to enter, AND COMPLETE, every room in the level...and get LOTS of points.

(3) There is a formula to always avoid the Angel of Poverty...don't know how we want to handle this for the contest.

The enemies that appear to come in endless waves are not, in fact, endless. There are only 4 waves of snakes at each location, in the overworld, as well as 6 (maybe?) waves of the obnoxious flying blobs. As far as I know, the only truly endless supplies of creatures, are the bastards that pop out of the ground and shoot at you, everything else (with patience) can be eliminated, allowing safe passage while boosting your points and heart count!

181,400 <-- as of this morning...but the NES is still cooking, so hopefully it doesn't lock-up while I'm at work. I'm on a roll.

394,000 <-- how that game finished up, spent lots of hearts on a big stock of reserve bottles in my barrel, but finally was done in by not having enough feathers :(

Another quick tip, since it seems like a lot of deaths are happening before the first labrynth:
