Defender 2600 cover art that was passed over

Recommended Posts

This painting was passed over in favor of the one which was used. What do you think?

Wow, it kind of looks like the Out of Control box. I would say this painting is more true to the game than the other one. Though this art is also a little bit cheesier too.

That's pretty cool! Definitely represents the game well. I always thought the art they went with was kind of funny.

It looks cheap, sorry to say. But I'm betting it would be great for numerous pirate/knockoff carts. :)

just wondering...

How do you know this is the art that was passed over?

Looks like something that belongs on a silver box-no red band period of Atari 2600 game cartridge boxes. Of course, it could have used some touch-ups.

Can someone mockup a Defender label with that artwork? I'd like to see what it would have looked like.

Buyatari, is it alright for me to add that artwork to my Defender page? It's prototype artwork afterall.

@tempest No prob. Go right ahead.

I also think it would be cool to see what it would like if it was used on a cart. Or put on a cart with another homebrews programmers idea of how of the game should have been done.

Looks more like 'Stargate' to me with the swirly-thing in the center... :)

... Where's Atariboy2600 when you need him?

... Hey, who is the chick in Ace Frehley's costume in the bubble just below the ship? :P

I actually like that painting better, but I wonder if it's because I'm just so used to seeing the original...

Nothing up to printing quality but you get the gist:

Doesn't seem Atari-ish for the time Defender came out. By that time it seemed the quality of the art was better. It looks like something a smaller company would use for their Defender clone.

I'm sure there's some pirated version of Enduro or Pac-Man out there with that label. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

It does seem a bit low-quality cheesy. What's with all the brush strokes in the sky? Does that say "666" off the white ship's starboard wing?

I think they made the right decision, seeing as how the actual artwork didn't have "buyatari" in big letters at the center of the artwork. ;) Anyway, to be serious, I kinda like it. And it does look like 666. Actually, it looks like more than just three sixes.

You sure that buyatari isn't just the name of some web site?

I see 666 too

HEHEHE I saw the number of the beast as well.

I like them both but I am more use to what they actually used , so I would give the nod to that and say that they made the right decision.

Some artists have more visable brushstrokes than others. I'm sure alot of it is edited out in the printing process. They aren't always as visable on the final product which is one of the reasons I enjoy the originals so much. Check out the final art to NES River City Ransom.
