jboypacman's Blog - Jboypacman's 2007:A Videogame Odyssey(2).

Recommended Posts

With more than a "Tip of my Hat" to the famous book and flim 2001:A Space Odyssey. This blog looks squarely at my newest member of my classic gaming collection the Magnavox Odyssey2.

The Magnavox Odyssey2 or simply the "O2" is a classic videogaming system that i find has little(but some)love for it.Between the Atari systems,Colecovision,Intellivision and a few others there seems to be little room in a lot of the people's collections out there.

Now i find the "O2" to have its charms to it,Built-In Keyboard,Boxy computer style controllers, and Voice Add-On(something that the Intellivision has and is well know for too). Also i love the design of the game carts(Basic black with a handle and simple but nice artwork on the lable).

The games themselfs are not the best but there are afew gems,K.C. Munchkin,Pick-Axe Pete, and Smithereens! to name afew. The "O2" had almost no 3rd party support(Imagic released Demon Attack and Atlantis for it here in the U.S.).

The system sold well early with over a million units sold by 1983(The "O2"was released in 1978)but Atari and Mattel's Intellivision proved to much(The "Video Game Crash"of 1983 did help matters either)and the "O2" faded from the U.S. market.

Now the Odyssey2 did do much better outside of the U.S. and was well recived in Europe were it was known as the Phillips

Videopac G7000 (or just as the Videopac)and there are a few game titles there were released exclusively there(Parker Bros. released arcade hits Frogger,Q*Bert,Popeye, and Super Cobra).

The Odyssey2 is a decent classic videogaming system which for the most part is easy to collect for so if you havnt had the chance to try out this great system you should go out and find yourself one afew games and try it out.Not greatest but the worst either.

Thanks for reading everyone and i hope you enjoyed this little"Odyssey(2)"i took you on. :)
