jboypacman's Blog - Super Breakout for the Atari 5200.

Recommended Posts

Ok so you have played Super Breakout for the Atari 2600 and it was/is a fun game to play and now you have a Atari 5200 and are looking for some "fun" games to play on it.

You discover that Super Breakout is on the Atari 5200 and you think to yourself"It was fun on the 2600 why not on the 5200"but the question is"Is it?"lets find out in my little review.......

Super Breakout from Atari for the Atari 5200 was released in 1982 and was the pack-in game for the 5200 before being replaced by Pac-Man(smart move if you ask me to sell more systems).

If you have played any game like this then you know what to do.Control your paddle on screen and bat a ball toward a wall of blocks trying to clear them all out so you can score points and advance to the next screen.Pretty basic game but can be lots of fun to play.

The 5200 version of Super Breakout is pretty much the same as its little brother counterpart on the Atari 2600.No new added features,it has all the same gameplay modes like the 2600 version(normal, double, cavity, and progressive).

The graphics are pretty basic here...Blocks,boarder,paddle and ball. The blocks do disintegrate when you hit them with your ball which is a cool visual effect but that is it,thats all you get.

Sounds are pretty basic here too,you have the ball hitting the paddle and ball hitting the wall of blocks but i guess you really dont need alot of in the way of sound effects here i suppose.

Super Breakout controls decent on the 5200 using the less then perfect 5200 controllers.Everything seems to responed well and it does what is suppose to do(but you are only going back and forth so how much trouble should it be).I really wish they had made a 5200 game paddle as this would really bump the gameplay a notch i think.

Now only one person can play Super Breakout at a time which i wish you could do two at a time instead.I think this and maybe a few more game varations would of really set this version apart from the 2600 version.

Now what do i think about Super Breakout overall? I like it despite offering nothing new to players who have/had already play it before on the Atari 2600.I guess i enjoyed the 2600 version anuff that it just carries over to the 5200 version.Still wish you could use paddle controllers for it but you make do with what is given to you.Thumbs up. :)
