Games you dreamed existed

Recommended Posts

Lordy I've dream about so many games it'd fill a book the size of college dictionary book. The reoccuring dream however there is 1 game cart that keeps popping up. A Menavision T handle cart, colored pink and has a barbie type game for the girls.

hehe.. I've dreamt out two games that I really loved... at least while asleep.

One was "FlipSide Pinball", which is hard to explain as it was a pinball table loaded with inside jokes from a BBS I was running at the time. (I actually mocked up a screen in Visual Pinball, but haven't got it coded yet:

The other I never coded, but it was getting great reactions in my mind. It was a Roadblasters clone at heart with a little Bump and Jump. The one scene I remember best was as racing along, in the distance appeared a pair of fast moving motorcycles coming head-on. You had only a second or two to react and destroy them both - when they got closer, they jumped up off the top of the screen. This was a serious butt-clench moment, as when they came down they both fired diagonal shots down at you, and you had to jump and dodge in mid-air to avoid the shots.

I'd love to reproduce that moment in RL. ;)

Well, there was this one really weird dream I had. You see, I was chasing somebody in a dark room. Then a guy in a deep sea diver suit jumped out and shot me in the shoulder. I got really mad, so I stuck a needle in my arm and shot a bunch of wasps from my wrist. The scuba guy stumbled back and fell over a rail, and I was all happy about it for a minute. Then someone stuck a big mining drill through my back, and I woke up.

Wait, that was really a game? Are you sure?

I have dreams where it is slightly in the future. These never happen exactly, but kinda a minor "In shape of things to come"

The first dream happened around 1985, I dreamt I was in a pawn shop, and there were some large game cartridges on a shelf in a place with a bunch of old junk. This cartridge was OLD and looked sun worn and weathered. At the time the only large cart was a 5200 cart, and it wasn't that. Looking back, the dream seemed to be in about the 90's to current era, with me finding an NES cart. I remember it was a Flintstones game or something like that.

There was another dream were I was digging through a dumpster that I got the impression was actually used to store a bunch of stuff that was piled into it and then hauled to a storage location and kept there for a while. It was like stuff (not trash) was thrown in there to sort through later. And we were inside the dumpster and looking through it all. As I was digging, I found an ORANGE Atari Jaguar cart. I remember seeing a bunch of odd games in oddly colored cartridges. This was before Battlesphere Gold or any cart that was molded in anything but black plastic. I remember looking forward to getting those somewhere and copied for the Jag community to enjoy. Of course a year ago we started to see cartridges molded in different plastics. I think orange was one tried. :D

THE MOST BIZAARRE however was THE ATARI 800 VGA. This was a graphics machine that I guess would have been similar to the speed of the 14 mhz upgraded Atari 8-bit computers. This was an Atari 8-bit computer that had all the features that we are basically reaching today. It had the ability to connect to a VGA monitor at greater resolutions. It was fast and highly graphics capible. The machine had a shell and casing that said "ATARI 800 VGA" on the side that looked like an XE case style that was more like a desktop, and had a detached keyboard. The most fun of this dream was when it was powered up and to demo this computer, they showed "STAR RAIDERS VGA" which displayed the new capibilities of the 8-bit computer with it's new abilities. The game ran fast and smooth, like Star Raiders, but this time the enemy ships were a lot more than just a simple tie fighter seen from a distance. The graphics were done in a dot art style, which was able to render quickly, and give a unique sense of shading and distance. When I say "Dot art" it was like they wanted to keep the feel of the original game by keeping it to a simple black background with white stars. Now imagine the stars going by, and then imagine a bunch of those stars clustered together taking on the form of a ship or a starbase. That was the dot art I was talking about. The fun was when we flew past an enemy ship, and we got close enough to this starship that it took up the bottom half of the screen. And then at point blank range fired on the outside of the Starship, where it gave detailed (as detailed as it could in the dot art style) of damage being inflicted on the ship, explosions, trailing smoke. :) That was fun.
