Best sideways shoot'em up

Can anyone recommend a good sideways shoot'em up for the 2600? I'm thinking about getting Defender II but wasn't sure if there was anything else I should consider.

I would say Moon Patrol fits into this category. Very fun AND challenging, and I absolutely DARE you to listen to that music once and not have it stuck in your head for the rest of your life.

Yeah I'll second Moon Patrol - great game.

 

I can also think of Laser Gates by Imagic, but I haven't played enough of it to say whether it would hold a lasting interest or not.

Didnt even think of Moon Patrol as its a great game.I havnt played Laser Gates so i cant make a call on that one.

Stargate IS fun .... but I don't love having to use 2 sticks to play it.

Some people like space jockey too ( i am not one of them)

super Cobra, I purchased with my VCS. Played it to death on Slow, Med, Fast. Could not stop until I got the box at the end in all three modes. Most excellent game.

Space Jockey is a favorite of mine and i dont know how i could forget it and its true a lot of people dont care for it.

Phaser Patrol is pretty good but it gets boring after a while (like all the rest of the 2600 shooters).

My favorite side scroller is Laser Gates. Never could beat the last stage, though. Still one of the best overall.

Laser Gates is my choice. I've also lost a few hours on Killer Satellites (starting the game at around level 40 or so)

I agree. Everyone needs to own a copy of Chopper Command.

Defender 2/ Stargate is great, Chopper command is also cool and a real challenge. I have another called Overkill, think it is a UK pirate, no idea what the original release was called. I'm pretty fond of planet patrol too. You could also get River Raid and put the TV on it's side

Space Jockey is a good game and cheap. Not sure why a lot of people hate it. I did think that it was a little strange blowing up people's houses though.

Seaquest is also a lot of fun. You can really get in a "zone" at the higher levels.
