Meltdown without gun?

Hi anyone know if Meltdown is playable without the lightgun? Alien Brigade works with the pad, so maybe this game too? If not then could I use the lightgun from a Sega Master system maybe?

You will need to modify the sega gun to work on an atari but it's a quick fix:

You will need three gallons of coffee also. Meltdown is so addictive that it will keep you up for days.
