Which do you like the most, 2600, 5200, 7800?

Recommended Posts

just curious as to which is liked the most and which is like the least. My order is:

5200: Mainly because it's big, i like the design, and the games were close to arcade quality.

2600: i put this one before the 7800 because it was the original that set the standard and is a true classic.

7800: I love this system as well but with few games, and the proline controllers being the way they are, just comes in 3rd with me.

First for me is the 7800. It isn't anything logical about the games or anything like that. Basically I like it because it's the system I really discovered classic arcade gaming on (playing mostly level based games growing up during the NES era). Thus, I first really played Robotron, Food Fight, Xevious, Joust, Dig Dug etc. on the 7800. You can imagine how discovering those incredible games for the first time just a few years ago on the system would lead to an attachment to it. I played most of those games before, but only very briefly. Even on 2600 when I got it handed down, I mostly played things like Pitfall and H.E.R.O. Also, the proline is probably my favorite controller ever. I don't care if other people don't like it, as other people like things like the Playstation and SNES controllers, which I completely hate.

I don't know what second would be. I don't have a 5200, and have decided that I can't be bothered to get one, as I'm getting an XEGS or 800 soon. thus, I don't have enough experience with it to say if I'd like it more than the 2600 or not.

I would go with the 5200 only because of BBSB, the multi-cart, the redemption and finally Adventure 2!! Next the 2600 purely because I broke into video games with this system and third the 7800, not enough titles.

If you take out the fact that the 7800 can play 2600 games, I'd probably go with the 2600 just on sheer numbers alone. But add the backwards compatibility and it's the 7800 all the way baby.

I have a 5200 too (it was the last Atari I finally got my hands on), but the bad controllers and 8-bit ports take it out of the running for me. I had already played most of those games on my 400/800XL.

So...

1. 7800

2. 2600

3. 5200

The prolines aren't really that bad once i get used to using them alot again but i must've went through a good 10 of them because they would sooner or later give out like the joystick would go in one direction but not the other, then the fire buttons would quit.

Thats the only problem with the 5200, if you have an 800 or pplayed an 800 or related, then you've experienced some of the games already. So for some, There are alternatives to the 52, but even tho i had an 800 a long time ago, i still like the 52 because i've always had one and i like the way it looks when set up.

I have to say the 7800 is. The backwards compatability makes it the best based on me used to own a 2600 jr and currently a 7800 for classic Atari systems. Having great 7800 games like Food Fight, and Beef Drop puts it over the edge against the 2600.

I never played or owned a 5200. I don't have any plans to get one and if I did, I would get 3rd party controllers for the system. I got enough systems to play overall already.

top: 7800 with a good stack of 2600 games

next to top: 5200 with working controllers.

There's no bottom here because all three are good systems.

Somehow, the 2600 is to me the most 'perfect' video game system ever. While the 7800 can in a sense do everything the 2600 can do, it can't do it in the same minimalistic 3-chip-plus-cartridge way. The 2600 is truly a marvel of engineering.

First: Atari 2600 - Been collecting for this for awhile and it's the system I grew up with

Second: 5200 - It's just an amazing looking machine and a good portion of the games are really top-notch.

Third: 7800 - I really want to love this system - it looks nice and all, but as of yet I lack games that keep me coming back.

But... If you had mentioned the Jaguar, it would have been extremely close to being first in my book (with the Lynx trailing right behind it :) )

2600:It was the first i played and to me its still the king.

7800:The dang thing is backwards compatiable with the 2600 and has some really nice updated classics on it and a few orignal titles for it to boot.

5200:I like my 5200 but i just dont seem to play it as much as i do the other two Ataris.

Different systems at different times for me, but currently:

Atari 5200: I'm really into this system recently. I recently got a mint and complete in the box system and now keep my older system hooked up ready to play. Space Dungeon junky for life!

Atari 2600: I play the games generally through the Colecovision 2600 adaptor. Tons of great games make it a staple in classic gaming.

Atatri 7800: Great arcade translations like Asteroids, Robotron, Dig Dug, Food Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Galaga, & Joust - Choplifter, Desert Falcon, and Winter Games are cool too. I played the hell out of this system last year and just taking a break for a while (I would have had the Twin Galaxies 2nd highest score on Robotron using my CX-40 dual controller contraption but I accidently taped over the game recording - pissed myself off! :x )

By the way, I noticed a cool website by this guy Jeff where he reviews his favorite consoles - for those interested:

Yeah, it's something like six chip, or seven chip, or something...eight with POKEY...but hey, it gets the job done!

1 - Atari 7800 - backwards compatability - plus you can pretty much use any controller on it (if you dont like the prolines, but i like them untill my hand cramps) i spent hours playing Pole Position and Food fight

2 - Atari 2600 - this was my first system after my Roberts pong system, and it looks cool no matter what version/style you get

the 5200 i wouldnt add to any list, except the worst thing ever created list, and i sold off both my 5200's and bought 5 multicarts for my 800xl - the only thing cool about it is the look, i would rather play the Channel F

I grew up with the 2600 since I first got it Christmas of '79. We never did look at the 5200 as there was no reason to get the 5200 when we have many 2600 games. Never knew about the 2600 adapter until I found eBay.

Skipped 7800 because the crash had occured and Atari games were scare even after the crash because some stores didn't want to risk money losing deal. I ended up with NES instead.

I'd have to say 2600 is my favorite system for the games as well, nothing close to Adventure, Yars Revenge, or Pitfall 2 (no Pitfall 2 for 7800, never knew about 5200 version until I found eBay)
