Turbo Duos

Recommended Posts

Well... I was thinking about grabbing one. Whaty should I look out for... and what should be a general price range right now? I've been watching a few on ebay for a few months now. I've seen a WIDE variety in pricing.

I think I heard there was a sound issue with some. (Same as the Turbo Express units... etc)

Any advice. Better places than perhaps ebay? Thanks

EBay would be your best bet Eric.It seems that the US ones are going up in price. You might want to consider looking at a import one(PC Engine Duo R).

My buddy Zeta owns one of these and has been picking up games for it fairly cheap.Just a thought buddy. :)

As a duo buyer go for japanese, plain and simple disk games are region free from my understanding, and they can be had for about 150 dollars, frankly since you seem to already have other means of playing US turbo games the US duo just wouldn't be worth the money

try asking at neo-geo.com in their everything else market place section, that's were i got mine and the response was fantastic

You cant play US games on a PC Engine or visa versa with out a converter.

Unfortunately you need a converter to play Japanese HuCards on a Turbo Duo, unfortunately due to some weird circuitry choices the same can't be said of the japanese Duo which needs modification to play anything but Japanese HuCards. Though if your looking to play just the CD games then your all set with either. Also I would suggest getting an Duo R system since the original DUO model uses old capacitors which by now have dried up, so CD Audio doesn't always work on them.. my PC Engine Duo does this but there is a great tutorial for replacing those capacitors here

D-Lite also offers the repairs himself along with S-video mods and such if your not upto soldering yourself (a DUO is quite an investment these days so if your not skilled with an iron I would say get somebody to do the fix for you.) though I hear he's been busy lately and might not get back to you.

Thanks for all of the replies. I was considering just grabbing a PC Engine Duo. I mainly want it to play CD games on. And it looks like I can get a PC Engie Duo for the same price or less then the old cd attachment set-up.

yeah, the old cd and pc engine set up is less reliable, you'd be in for quite a few headaches if you went that route :P good luck with your search.

On that note..... Have any of you NOT collected a US HU card due to owning a PC Engine HU Card of the same game?

I'm wondering how I will handle my collection when it comes to that situation. I have a few deals working right now for some very cheap PC engine carts. But I'm wondering if I'll avoid the US card after buying the PC Engine card.

Silly question/situation... but a valid one.

Well... what about this:

A PC Engine Duo-R that is Region modded and S-Video modded. I think it had an LED mod as well. Price $275 shipped. Is that worth it?

I'm guessing that's a D-Lite special :D

For the S-Video board plus the labor that goes into it, that seems like a good price.

Can you elaborate? Not sure what you are talking about.

Right now... I know I'll be able to play 95% or so of the PC engine/US Hucard library. Everything but the Arcade cd games... which I'll need a card for. What's this laseractive thing?

Question:

Duos: I think they tak different controllers than the TG-16 consoles... right? Also... what type of Turbo Stick would work with a PC Engine Duo-r? Anyone have one? :)

There were two PAC units, one for the Genesis/Sega CD and one for the PC Engine/CD games.

The Genesis one was more popular.

Well according to the wiki, PC-Engine component is really sought after. I thought the things were damn expensive back when they were still sold.. I can only imagine what they go for on Ebay x.X I think sticking with a console is better choice then the Laser Active, it's all module based meaning you'd have to search out the base then each module you want.

The only two PAC units you need are the Genesis one (there was a complete PAC unit for the Genesis sold for $100 in CGE) and the PC-Engine one (goes for around $300-$500).

Not only that, but you can play those special Mega LD games (requires the Genesis PAC) and the LD-Rom2 games (requires the PC-Engine PAC).

I think it's cool to have.

I thought the Laseractive was cool until I got one.

Apparently they have a common problem of not working when the pac is installed.

For instance, if I have the pac plugged in, the tray on the player won't work, and it won't play genesis games.

I remove the pac and the tray works fine, it plays movies fine.

Mine stopped working about five months of me purchasing it. What really sucked was that I only had about three hours of actual use on it.

As far as import/us collecting, unless something was heavily censored (kato & ken/jj&jeff) I always just get the US version.

Knowing that most platformers and shooters are playable no matter what the language used in their menus are, I still prefer to see English as much as possible.

Plus, the American box art usually blows away the japanese crap

that was EXTREME sarcasm there
