Carts okay through airport magnetic screeners?

Recommended Posts

This is a question that just popped in my head. I am going to the CGE2007 show and plan to buy some CGE exclusive release stuff (and probably others). Will the chips get damaged/destroyed if it goes through the carry-on airport screeners?

Thanks!

What you should be worried about is whether or not Homeland Secutiry will pull you aside and accuse you of smuggling cart bombs onto the plane.

Hmmm, I don't see why the screeners would damage them. People put sensitive equipment like laptops through them.

Don't take any Bomb carts across borders. Leave them all here thanks. ;)

Ha!

Funny take on the subject.

I've carried my Jaguar though the screeners before. I thought for sure they'd at least take it out and look at it. Nope. I guess there's a difference between electronics for a game and for bombs...

Years ago when I was in Toronto, I found a closeout electronics store that was selling a bunch of 7800 games for $5 Canadian.

Of course I bought one of everything and brought it back.

No problems

Though customs did laugh at me when they asked what I was bringing back and I said "a bunch of old Atari games, are those OK?"

I forgot to mention the Cuban cigars..... :D

That make sense. I'll be all right.

I had an interesting experience coming back to the US from Canada once too. I have another hobby, Micro RC cars. Built a sweet custom track, own lots of ZipZaps, Microsizers, etc. When I heard there was a new one (MicroZ's) only sold at The Source stores in Canada I took a drive up there and bought one of each.

When I tried to get back in, the border guy gave me the third degree. I sat at the check point for about 30 minutes answering questions and have him check and re-check my car and trunk. Why can't a guy in his mid 30's fill his car with Canadian toys and transport them back to the US hassle free; geesh!!

:-)

Starpath games might not hold up to magnetics too well...

Damn! Does international mail go through those type scanners, it's just I have bought a supercharger and games from an atari age member in America and it's on route to the uk as we speak.

Any game going threw an airport scanner will be perfectly fine, Starpath tapes included.

Yup, EEPROMs and all.

Unless Homeland 'Security' shines a super duper UV 'anti-terrorist' flashlight up your ass.

I've never seen a magnetic scan of any kind at an airport. I've taken music cassettes on the plane several times and there was no problem. Now if the scanners were, in fact, magnetic, then my albums would suddenly have been blank! :o

The scanners are not actually magnetic; the metal detectors you walk through or have waved at you use radio waves, and the ones your baggage goes through use x-rays. Producing x-rays can also produce magnetic fields, but the problem of airport scanners harming magnetic media was solved long ago. Magnetic fields of less than insane intensity will not harm EPROM or mask ROM chips.

Your cartridges will be in more danger from increased radiation at cruising altitude than they will be from security scans. The atmosphere absorbs much solar and cosmic radiation, so flying above 3/4 of it exposes you to more radiation.
