eyg2181 #1 Posted July 27, 2007 A while back i figured out that the sega genesis controller works with the atari 2600 and 7800 game systems. i just happened to notice that the ends on the controllers were the same, so i thought i would try it out and see if it would work, and sure enough it did... i must say the its a lot easier to use the sega controller than the atari joystick. so the past year or so, i have been using my sega controller instead of the atari joystick, and not to mention the controllers that came with the system did'nt fire...lol i think this is neat because the sega controller is a lot easier to control and handle. and im not sure if anyone else would ever have thought of that, but if they didnt, i did...So Now You Know Too. well, i just thought i would share this piece of information with the other atari fans. Note, The D-pad on the sega controller acts as the joystick, and the "B" button on the sega controller acts as the fire button. so if you want to, give it a try! jsoper #3 Posted July 27, 2007 Proper netiquette is to read the FAQ a couple times before starting to post, but welcome to AA anyway. Q: How do I convert Sega controllers to Atari pinout? A: [Note: Based on a non-random sample of size 2, it was found that unmodified Sega controllers work fine on the 2600/7800, with B acting as the single fire button. As an aside, Sega Master System controllers (model 3020) work too, with button 1 as the fire button. Use the instructions below if you wish to have a truly 7800 compatible stick with 2 separate fire buttons.]
crunchysuperman #4 Posted July 27, 2007 Sorry to ruin your exclusive rights to such knowledge, but Creative Micro Designs was selling Genesis clone controllers for The C64 & 2600 over ten years ago - I still have one.
+SpiceWare #5 Posted July 27, 2007 it's well known. Probably not as well known is that games can be written that use the C button - Second Fire button on the 2600...

2600Lives #11 Posted July 28, 2007 It was really the way you stated it that made everyone get snarky, man. Most everybody on this site has been involved in gaming since it's early inception, so we know most of the little ins and outs and tricks of the trade. Another reason is there used to be a guy named Robsterman 'round here who literally thought he was the god of videogames, and was totally untouchable and that he knew EVERYTHING there was to know. Thankfully, he's long gone. Go through some of the old threads from a few years ago and find something he said to see what I mean.

opeygon #14 Posted July 29, 2007 don't let those guys get to you. i didn't know that little tip you left and i've been gaming for nearly 28 years. of course, i never really gave a shit about about sega... anyway, you can ask and post about anything you want here (within reason of course). if some people get bent out of shape by your posts so what. all they have to do is close the window and move on. personally, i think most of the reactions to your post are a little fucked up. but thats the way it goes around here sometimes. hey, at least you know that there are plenty of assholes out there welcome to AA... yeah

Maybe a better way to approach it would have been "Hey you guys probably know this already but........" I mean, it's cool that he found this on his own (come to think of it, I did too, about 12 years ago, LONG before sites like this!) but he acted like he is the only one smart enough to have even found it. People like him are why I didn't post here (or any other message boards) for a long time.

2600Lives #18 Posted July 29, 2007 Yeah, he did refer to himself in the third person, and there's been several times when we suspected that he had come back under an alias.
Asaki #19 Posted July 29, 2007 I remember when I got my first Genesis, I thought of trying out the gamepads on the 2600, but my friend said he did and it fried his Atari, so I was too afraid until I saw it on the Internet >_<
