Cobra Commander #1 Posted July 29, 2007 Some pics of an mod I didnt quite finish a couple years ago. I just got the plastic for the bezel (back of 1st pic) The "cart slot-to-card edge" assembly is made from two of the card edge sides of some 72-pin connectors with the help of a band saw. The "Power switch/reset switch" PCB was cut in half with a band saw as well. I still need to shield the A/V wires from the Main PCB to the RF section. I still dont have an idea for the 4switch that came out of the case.

Atarifever #4 Posted July 30, 2007 (edited) I must admit, I was a little hesitant to click on a topic promising "big pictures of an NES woody." I figured some crazed fanboy had finally done what they'd all dreamed about. I agree with Shawn. It's like Frankenstein's monster: It seemed like such a great idea, but now you must try to burn it in the name of God and nature. AtariMan1976 #6 Posted July 30, 2007 wow, good concept but that thing is one ugly POS. Sorry I'm all out of Armor All. Well i must admit i encourage any new ideas and a great attempt but i think IMO, the atari is better with its own parts and the nintendo parts are better left in its original case. Theres nothing like having original equipment.
Vic George 2K3 #7 Posted July 30, 2007 Rather funny in a way to see an NES cartridge inserted into an Atari 2600 game system shell.

Theres nothing like having original equipment. The original NES equipment sucks a big fat one, mainly the 72 pin POS connector. This is main reason I did this, the Atari case was just for kicks. I love the original NES. It's what we've seen in the movies. Was a very big icon at the time. I understand the pins can be a pain in the ass, and seem like every system has a bad side to someone but then if you don't like the original design, Nintendo did release the toploader to get away from this problem. I just never liked the way it looks tho.

BigO #13 Posted August 7, 2007 It's always fun to do something just a little bit, uhm, "off". Though I have no interest in NES, really, I'd like to see this when it's finished. I'm sure the overlay on the bezel will go a long way toward cleaning up the look. As for the rest of its appearance, could you clean it up a little by moving some of those chunks of plastic inboard? For example, the two RCA jacks prominent in picture 2: couldn't that chunk be moved inside the case with enough relief around the RCA jacks to allow the plug to be fully inserted? You might even use standoffs of some sort to intentionally recess the jacks until the face of them is near flush with the surface of the case. Not being critical, just offering suggestions. As long as you have fun with it, it's a successful project.
Cobra Commander #14 Posted August 8, 2007 (edited) I made my first attempt at the bezel last night. It went alright till I measured incorrectly for the holes for the switches. Oh well I have plenty more plastic, I guess I'll have to actually take it apart. Pics to come eventualy. shadow460 #15 Posted August 8, 2007 NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! How could you do that to a 2600!? Ack! that's like, like, trying to use an Intel processor with an AMD chipset! Like trying to put a Chevy engine in a Ford truck! Like trying to dip peanut butter into chocolate! *pleading* How could you!? Do you realize what you've done? The Intellivision parts are that way! I hope it turns out well. Once you've fixed up a few minor things, it should look decent.
BigO #16 Posted August 8, 2007 (edited) (What's wrong with a Chevy engine in a Ford truck? My 70+ year old dog has benefitted from learning that new trick.) BTW, what's up with the orientation of the power and reset switches? Any way to rotate those 90 degrees before you finish the bezel? Atari5200 #17 Posted August 8, 2007 does anybody remember the console someone made, it was basically a wooden block square with a few different console cartridge slots all around it?? This reminded me of that.
