Just saw the Jaguar in action for the first time today...

Recommended Posts

I've never seen one in motion, outside of Youtube. I've never seen a seen a single screen outside of JPEG.

Project Tempest changed everything.

Stuttering along at half speed, in silence, in a darkened room, like the first movies...

Fight for Life crashed as soon as the polygons appeared, I could barely see the fighters in Hell, so far below.

Missile Command 3D was glitched, the words lost in digital snow.

But I saw the Jaguar move, for the first time all the same.

Not bad. It's mipmapping gives it's worst programmers the potential to match the best Playstation textures - everything is reassuringly solid, and the colors flow together - there's a Rare in it's N64 expansion pack days feel to it all, minus the spray paint blur. The Playstation is unable to do the same without careful color choices and creative programming.

It's a shame that otherwise, the polycounts and art direction range from Super FX chip 2 to bargain bin PSX - high detail smooth shaded angular modeled characters easily lend themselves to anime/graphic novel style. Sin City, Hellboy, and SoulTaker all are wonderful examples of what the Jag could have reached for.

I finally get why Jag fans are so passionate; it died way too soon, leaving no evidence of what it could do...

It's the ultimate tease.

It's time for you to get your hands on a real JAG! ;)

The mystery of it all. You need to find a friend with a Jag and a large

collection of carts and see it for yourself in person.

;) It'll be a long time before I can afford one, and even longer before I can afford any games ...but it's worth waiting for. In the meantime, I can continue to inject my dangerously uninformed opinions into the dry technical debates here, can't I?

Alas, my friends all think I'm insane for hanging out here. They'll play the 2600 occasionally, even enjoy a few games, but soon as I mention the words "Homebrew or Jaguar", they go into emergency lockdown mode to avoid risk of infection.

I'm betting they've never seen one either...

See what bad press can do to an otherwise perfectly decent game system?

It's a shame really.

The Jag was my first dedicated gaming console (Lynx notwithstanding) and, not having played anything more graphically advanced than Trailblazer on my XE, I was duly impressed by it when I bought my first one in 2001. Not having ever tried a 3DO, PSX, N64, or Dreamcast at that point, I was simply amazed by the quality of games such as T2K and AvP. Now, having played tried all of those other systems at least once, I'm even more amazed what Atari was able to do with the limited resources that they had. The Jag is a great system for many reasons, and its small library means that most gamers can get pretty much the entire library and play it all, too. I wasn't much impressed when I saw it in stores in '94, but I'm hooked on it today. :)

Just go to your nearest Gamer Meet and they'll most likely have one on display. :D

There has to be someplace he can view one. A Sprite, you need to look harder. ;)

Glad you got a small glimpse of the Jaguar, but Project Tempest is hardly much better than youtube movies, speed wise even worse. You REALLY have to see the Jag's best games in action on the real machine, if you think the solid texures were impressive with the games you mentioned, you ain't seen nothin' until you see Hover Strike: Unconquered Lands CD on the Jaguar/CD. Then you REALLY know what Gorf and the rest of us are talking about when we say the Jag's textures blow away the PSX or any other 32-bit system's textures, and why you can have lower polygon counts, yet games that still look better than PSX games, even with less poly's...and HoverStrike: U.L. CD, to me, looks far better than any N64 textures I've ever seen; super-highres textures that are sharp, even close up, which is far superior to the N64's blurring of textures to hide blockiness.

don't forget the sound.. it makes the music crackle and the sounds muffled (or maybe thats just for me since it's very homebrew unfriendly for me..)

maybe if we knew where he's located, someone here might live close enough to give him a look.

Wait. The OP saw a Jaguar emulator in action and considers that the same as seeing an actual Jaguar in action?

Uh, not.

At least a real console can play Fight for Life, not that you'd want to actually play it. Missile Command 3D is a good game, and you should see it on a real console. Why? It's not glitched.

You still have not seen the Jaguar. It can't be that hard to get one.

Seeing it on YouTube cuts the frames in half anyway. It's not the same thing. If the flics impressed

you the machine live will really impress you.

I live in Pennsylvania, where the Civil War is still waged for hearts and minds.

Alas, no car, owing to a handicap.

But thanks for the thought.

Online? No. It's purely a money issue. Right now, at this very moment, I can't justify the spending on a luxury item.

Oooooh! Now that sounds like a class trip for all! I doubt I'd have anything to show by then.

Maybe next visit. Hopefully they will have a lot more people than in 05. It did get crowded

saturday and the last part of Sunday.

You had a rather large set up there in 05. It was cool seeing all those homebrews for the

2600 , the other Ataris, Coleco and others. You dont have to bring everything but it was a nice

NEAT display you had.

Who knows....maybe Terance will have Mad bodies and Mighty Frog ready.

What's been the hold up on Mad Bodies anyway? I saw it/played it and it looked to be complete at the Milwakee classic gaming expo way back in 2003(?) I think. Dan Iacovelli was demonstrating it (sorry Dan if i misspelled your name, it's been a while since I've seen it). I had thought it was due for an imminent release back then...
