8th lutz #1 Posted August 2, 2007 http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/arkanoid...nob-controller/ The first portable version of the game (not counting unofficial homebrews), Arkanoid DS will include an attachable knob controller that plugs into the DS' Game Boy Advance slot, according to a 1up translation of a Famitsu story. The game will also have 140 stages and a quest mode focused on completing specific tasks, according to the story. The game is slated for a December release in Japan, and while a North American release hasn't yet been announced, the bevy of arcade classics already on the system makes it seem likely. Jess Ragan #2 Posted August 2, 2007 Dagnabbit! I was gonna post this! Man, this is too cool. I remember playing Arkanoid with the Vaus controller way back in the 1980s, and this will be a great way to relive those fond childhood memories. I hope homebrewers find a way to make the dial compatible with their own games! JR

I'm not so sure...Arkanoid was left off the Taito Legends compilations released in Europe and North America, reportedly due to legal issues. But perhaps those issues have been resolved. Taito didn't put Arkanoid in any of the JP PS2 Taito Memories collections either. The Arkanoid mini games were left intact for the US versions of Taito's mini game games for DS and Wii, though (Turn it Around DS and the upcoming Furu Furu Park Wii). Those "legal issues" with Arkanoid sound a bit suspect to me. If Arkanoid really had legal issues, why were similar games like Break 'em All, Nervous Brickdown, Puchi Carat in Taito Legends 2, Plump Pop in Taito Legends 1, and Block Block in Capcom Classics Collection 2 allowed to be released or put into compliations? Atarifever #5 Posted August 2, 2007 The first portable version of the game (not counting unofficial homebrews), Okay, I'm almost certain I saw this game on Gameboy when I was a kid. I remember seeing it for rent at "Mario's", a videogame rental place in my home town that was attached to an icecream parlour called "Luigi's". It was the best failed business I ever saw. You probably saw Alleyway, a breakout clone from Nintendo. It looks similar to Arkanoid, but plays more like breakout. It has multiple levels, but no power ups. It also has some elements from breakout and super breakout like stages that are similar to super breakout's progressive mode and a paddle that shrinks when the ball hits the top wall. Here are some scans of the DS Arkanoid. Edited August 2, 2007 by BrianC

I'm aware of that. I have no idea what the story is, but that's what one of the developers of Taito Legends said in an interview when specifically asked about Arkanoid. He said there were legal issues and that Taito outright refused to license Arkanoid for inclusion. What reason whould he have to make this up?

There used to be a Mario's movies & games video rental place near my house. It didn't last forever. What got me was the incredible variety of video games for rent. You could rent game boy games for a whole week, dirt cheap! I miss that place.
128bytes #13 Posted December 19, 2007 (edited) Mine arrived this morning, great game and love the paddle controller. Shame I don't understand Japanese, but I get the general idea I would love to see pictures of the controller - this may be the thing that gets me to finally move from GBA to DS. quick edit: I found a pic here Edited December 19, 2007 by 128bytes

Lord Helmet #15 Posted December 19, 2007 (edited) That looks really cool. I bet it would be cool for driving games as well, though I doubt it would be supported for that. Edited December 19, 2007 by Lord Helmet

I don't know, the JP Famicom version of Chase HQ supported the Famicom Arkanoid controller.
