Marathon: Durandal-Xbl version gives gamers motion sickness (joystiq.com)

Gamers that played First person shooters in the past without suffering motion sickness is now getting motion sickness from playing the xbl version Marathon: Durandal.

Joystiq.com talked to Freeverse's Bruce Morrison and Buce said First, try playing with the "camera bob" option set to on as the lack of default motion tends to make things appear smoother than they already are. Also, if your mother never told you better, try adjusting your seating position. You may be sitting far too close to your set for this odd, stomach churning experience.

Joystiq.com made the comment "aving taken his advice, we can now enjoy this remastered classic with only a mild headache as the side effect. Thanks, camera bob!"

I read that somewhere too...maybe on IGN?

In any case, I tried out the demo, I didn't notice any motion sickness, but maybe it's only in the full version.

I guess I'll find out soon enough.

This FPS is worse than other FPS though, many people who play tons of FPS are getting sick from this game.

I call it "render-sick", and I do get it from some FPS games. But third-person views are fine.

I get a different kind of sick from playing Descent Maximum (PS1) though, where I get a crick in my neck from playing it more than half an hour or so. Even running a rip of it on a PSP seems to be enough to cause the problem. I think it has to do with trying to turn my neck to look around, or something like that.

I still get queasy just thinking about Descent. I thouhgt we were beyond all this but here comes retro gaming to bring it back!

I think that only works for Mac users though, right?

I thought people were making a big deal out of a few isolated incidents with people getting motion sickness with this, but after buying it last night I started to feel pretty poor after about 10-15 minutes when I stopped. Not sure if this is worth it anyways, it seems pretty average, wishing I had tried the demo.

Nope, you can run all the games via Aleph One on Windows, Linux, or OSX -- or the original games in OS9 on the Mac.

Turn down the control sensitivity if you're getting pukey -- it's a bit too fast as is but not bad if moved down a bit.

Why pay for this? The Marathon games have been free for download with online play for many many years.

Improved graphics, online multiplayer, achievements, etc.
