Can I make a suggestion when posting binaries?

Recommended Posts

Maybe you guys think this is a bad idea, just throwing it out there, when posting a binary with your project, it would be nice if the first post was edited and had the latest version attached instead of including a later version 10 pages into the replies.

I always try to get the latest and greatest when I try these things out and sometimes it's a pain to start from the back and work your way backwards through all the responses.

OK I'll shut up now.

I dunno I kind of like being able to see the progress of a game. Plus, if you click the little paperclip next to the subject a window will pop up showing all the attachments for that thread. Just scroll to the bottom and grab the latest. That's what I do at least.

I can see the advantages to both, and I usually post updated binaries later in the thread. But another option that could use the best of both worlds would be to post the new binaries in the first thread, but give them slightly different names (like adding on the date or version number), and *not* removing the previous attachment(s), so that you have a series of sequential attachments in the first post, showing the development progress.

But as far as adding the version number or date, I actually don't care much for downloading each new version of other people's work, and ending up with dozens of different source code files and bin files that I have to clean up after. So it might be a good idea to do it both ways-- post a series of individual updates in the first post, with the version or date on them, and *also* post a "current/latest/greatest" version in the same post but without any version number or date. Then you can download and peruse the individual progress versions if you want, or just download the most up-to-date version and overwrite any older version.

Hmmm...I did not know that. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I bet very few people know about that neat trick. :)

I do agree that it is nice when authors update the first post in a thread with the latest binary, as it can take some work to find the latest binary in a thread. Especially when there are many posts after an author's last post, then you have to go through the thread backwards hunting. Of course, the paperclip trick does make this easier. :D

That's nice, but I think something is up in the BB configuration that doesn't let you edit a message after six or seven months.

Look for one of your own old messages and see if this is still the case.

I agree that I like being able to see how a game progresses by seeing each binary along the way. Since we're all learning about the uber nifty paperclip icon, it's not really a big deal I don't think.

My only request is that people use some foresight in the naming, using some kind of logical sequence so when you have all the versions downloaded it makes some sense. It's annoying when people attach new versions using the exact same filename as the previous ones.

I would like to add, in the case of the generic/root level homebrewed forums, that one clearly specifices what system it's for. There are quite a few threads in these foums where it's not mentioned, and has to be infered by reading replies and looking at screen shots to figure out.

No biggie if the file is posted as a zipfile. The binary inside would have a file creation date (so that could be used as a "version number"). Generally, the latest version of a WIP effectively renders all previous versions obsolete anyway...so that is the one that players should use. It's probably a good idea to follow the thread for the game you are interested in regardless, so you can keep abreast of subtle changes/bugfixes described in the posts. It's really not that much work.

Nor did I. When did the Als start doing that?

Not sure. I don't think I noticed it until after the switch to the new BB software...so it may have been then.
