Double Dragon and Karateka: Can They Be Saved?

Recommended Posts

Contrary to popular belief, Pac-Man is one of the best games for the 2600. Don't believe me? Go over to the hacks, find Hack-Em, or any one of the other repair jobs - it's amazing what a little TLC can do.

How hard would it be to do the same for the 7800?

Double Dragon: Interrupt enemy AI when an attack connects, creating a small window of opportunity to deliver a combo.

Karateka: Remap the controls.

Two small changes, and two mediocre games become two more reasons to collect for the 7800.

Who knows what else is possible?

Karateka does sound logical for hacking the game for improvements. It was something I thought it could've been done with that game. I am not the person to do that though. :(

I took a programing course in high school 13 years ago and I had a difficult time with making programs that work using basic for the apple IIe. Asking me doing any programing is a bad idea as a result. I forgot what I learned and I was above my head when I took the class when I was in 10th grade.

Hacking wouldn't be enough for Double Dragon for improvements. Double dragon needs big changes. There are things to be done for the game to be good arcade port.

The game needs a pokey sound chip. There would be turns that sounded like the arcade game with a pockey sound chip. There are some weapons missing in the game. The game needs improvements in graphics also. There are moves missing in the game also. I think a 144k or 256k version of Double Dragon is needed to show any improvements in the game.

I'll be a while before I can get into programming for an 8-bit machine, but I already know a few improvements that can be done to Karateka:

Implement the story. Just going from the title to the action makes everything feel rushed.

Give the enemies their outfits and some slightly better colors. Sorry, but just having the same guy with various colors (pink and lime green, and Akuma just having red gi??) looks kinda dull IMO.

Make a button required to use attacks, not move. I can understand a button to switch from movement/battle stances, but having to hold the button to move while in battle stance is a bit illogical.

Speed the game up slightly. Just a thought.

Music. Would this help add to the game's atmosphere?

More detail. I mean the game looks a tad plain compared to the A8 version.

Like this? It's a quick MS paint mock-up, but if anyone knows how to hack graphics data, it's no trouble for me to remake the sprites .

I would just be happy to see the controller lag in Karateka fixed. Timing your high kicks to avoid the bird by compensating for input lag is a real buzzkill.

1. Can Tile Molester be used by someone with no programming skills? Assume you're speaking to an unusually dense form of sponge...

2. Will I be limited to editing their 3 color sprite data, or will it allow me to convert a single sprite character into multiple sprites for more colors/detail?

Apologies for the stupid newbie questioning...
