NES Light Gun Games....what did I miss out?....

Recommended Posts

....or is it reason enough to get one used/refurbished NES or clone for some party fun?

Apperently I havent played any of those zapper games back then. Today I came across Duck Hunt on my NES emulator.

I am asking myself is it fun enough to get a set and some light gun games to entertain a party? The more drinks consumed the better?

Would anyone think that the Messiah NEX for the sole purpose being carried around once in a while isnt up to this task?

I would prefer it over real hardware cauz of its size and no real NES being worn off over time.

I am always after good party games and bought a year ago for cheap the Xavix console with bowling and it already paid off.

Or, in the end, only the Wii is the way to go? But for my purpose it is too expensive still.

Personally, I liked the SMS light gun games better. There was more variety and the games had more depth. But I did enjoy a couple of NES light gun games back in the day - haven't played anything but Duck Hunt in many years, so take this for what it's worth my favorites were:

Gumshoe - a very challenging and unique shooter. Never did finish it, but I still liked the game a lot, and it was my favorite of the bunch.

Wild Gunman - kind of cheesy and simple wild west shootout, but still pretty enjoyable.

The LJN Paintball game - I forgot the title - was actually pretty good, too. You could move left & right w/ the dpad, while shooting w/ the zapper.

In my opinion, the NES light gun games aren't really good enough to warrant getting an NES for, but of course there are lots of other good reasons to get one. Again, it's been a long time since I've played any of these games, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Definately these three games...Freedom Force (which I can't stress enough......pure action.....need a keen eye and trigger finger), Hogan's Alley, and Wild Gunman.

Like Bydo....I do like the SMS Light Gun games but the NES ones are just as good to me.....though Safari Hunt was a better pack-in than Duck Hunt.

Also....I recommend Gotcha!.....the control schemes are awesome and make you enjoy the game more. Thats the paintball one Bydo was speaking of.

Also give Gumshoe a chance.

Other Light Gun games that are better suited for the controller are Operation Wolf and Mechanized Attack.

Well, maybe...I brought my NES over my relatives house one Saturday night and we all stayed up 'til 2 AM or so just playing Dunk Hunt and Hogan's Alley...everybody had fun (and there wasn't even any alcohol involved). :)

Duck Hunt & Hogans Alley are MUST-HAVES for the Zapper.

I found Gumshoe awhile back but dont much care for it, it's a bit difficult w/ it's near-constant firing.

I'm with the people who prefer the SMS lightgun games... by a lot.

However, I rented Chiller when I was a kid, and I thought it was incredibly cool back then. Messed up, but very cool.

I don't know of another way to Operation Wolf with a gun at home. Not saying there isn't one of course, but NES does offer it and it's fun enough. Shooting Gallery is pretty different and has some character too.

Konami made a few games where the gun is optional, but the better if you use it like Bayou Billy and Lone Ranger.

Gun games are not worth buying an NES for, unless you are a light gun freak. However, if you have an NES, you need to have a few of these games as a number of them are decent to good

Aha - thanks, that's it! I had low expectations for that game, and sort of picked it up on a whim because I do like light gun games. I remember being pretty impressed.
