rxd #1 Posted August 14, 2007 Has anyone ever compiled a list of the best freeware games available for the PC and where to get them? I always thought a list like this would be useful as I have occasionally stumbled across some good games on the net, but I'm sure I'm missing a ton of what's out there. Classic Pac #2 Posted August 14, 2007 Good news for you and everyone who reads this I compiled my own list. I admit it wasn't until I finally put Linux on this laptop of mine that put me in the right direction. But this should not worry you, as most of my links have versions that not only run on Windows, but Macs and as well as Linux. Some even have versions that will run on the PSP so everyone is covered. http://supertux.lethargik.org http://www.frozen-bubble.org http://kqlives.sourceforge.net http://tuxracer.sourceforge.net http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux_Racer http://linux.tlk.fr/games/Powermanga http://armagetron.sourceforge.net http://www.shatters.net/celestia http://www.flightgear.org http://www.gltron.org http://torcs.sourceforge.net http://tremulous.net http://supertuxkart.berlios.de/index.html http://icculus.org/neverball http://www.glest.org/en/index.html http://www.bzflag.org http://sauerbraten.org http://www.pankhurst.uklinux.net/zaxxon.html http://www.imitationpickles.org/pyweek1 http://www.racer.nl http://www.americasarmy.com http://www.rockstargames.com this last one may surprise you but once your on Rockstar Games home page click on the classic game link and that will lead you to free downloads (sorry windows only) of classic Rockstar games titles namely GTA 1, GTA2, and Wild Metal

+Random Terrain #6 Posted August 15, 2007 I need to check out the links given so far. It would be cool to find some free games I don't know about. I love being able to play Star Control 2 on my PC for free without needing to drag out my 3DO: http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=111400 This is probably pushing the limits of what you are looking for, but I'm very happy that I can play a simulated version of the handheld game Packri Monster for free on my PC: http://dominique.biesmans.com/archives/2005/01/index.html And are you looking for stuff just to download or are you also looking for free online games? Every time I find a free online game that I like enough, I put it on my web site: http://www.randomterrain.com/games/index.html

oesii #14 Posted August 20, 2007 Can't go wrong with this huge list. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPGames.html My favorite because it plays like Quake and Unreal Tournament is Nexiuz.
+Random Terrain #15 Posted August 20, 2007 Can't go wrong with this huge list. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPGames.html My favorite because it plays like Quake and Unreal Tournament is Nexiuz. There are some cool things in that list. I played Warzone 2100 on the old Playstation and I think I kind of liked it, so it will be nice to download that and try it again. I will be downloading Freeciv for sure. Lots of stuff to check out.
Asaki #16 Posted August 20, 2007 http://sauerbraten.org Good choice =) Bunch of guys I know are working on that...the main guy (Aard) also worked on the engine for Far Cry. My favorite because it plays like Quake and Unreal Tournament is Nexiuz. I actually worked on that for a while It was originally supposed to be an MMOFPS. I'm not sure exactly how it was going to work, but I recall some vague info about lots of maps running at the same time, and 64 (or maybe more) players at the same time. Anyway, that didn't happen, so Nexuiz sadly didn't get to possibly wear the crown of "first MMOFPS ever". Would've been neat, historically. I could list a TON of freeware games (and even more Quake mods), but that would take me quite a while, and I'm not sure what the stipulations are on this board about linking "abandonware" sites... *cough* Underdogs *cough* *cough* Probably my favorite "freeware" game ever (I don't think it's actually freeware, but has very lenient copyrights) would have to be Rogue. If you've ever played Diablo 1/2, NetHack, Dungeon Crawl, Torneko's Dungeon, Castle of the Winds, etc., they are all descendants of it (Rogue-likes, they're called). I'd link it, but there's so many different versions of it all around the Internet...I usually just stick with the classic DOS release.
MCHufnagel #17 Posted August 20, 2007 Gamehippo is one of the better sites out there. All of it's games are freeware, so no legal gray areas. http://www.gamehippo.com/ Lots of variety too!
Quadhorn #18 Posted August 20, 2007 "Beneath a Steel Sky" is now free to download direct from Revolution's website; "Flight of the Amazon Queen"'s available too. http://www.revolution.co.uk/_display.php?id=16 Most people'll need ScummVM to play them: http://www.scummvm.org/
Classic Pac #19 Posted August 20, 2007 I know this is going to sound weird but I do find this a good place to start if your looking for free computer games even if your not running Linux. My second computer runs Ubuntu Linux which is a Debian based Linux and it uses .deb files think of them like .exe files for windows. Anyway this site http://www.getdeb.net has links to the home pages of the software they have availible and many of them including if you click on catagories and then games you might have something you like. NE146 #21 Posted August 20, 2007 Can anyone recommend any good freeware shmups (shoot'em-ups) or a good website that lists them? Thanks. I have ONE single recommendation for this thread and it happens to be a shmup. It'll blow your mind! The problem is I forget the name and it's on a hard drive I just popped out the other day. Keep watching this space and I'll boot up with that drive and get what exactly it is and re-post the url. Tiny. Awesome. Shmup. You'll dig it... Now for me to get it...
