How good is the game? How does the Jag version rate?

(row 1: SNES, Genesis/Megadrive, PSX/Arcade)

(row 2: Jaguar, Turbografx/PC Engine, Lynx)

In my personal opinion it´s the best version I erver played, beside the arcade. It was there before the psx version came out and was really stunning. Although a little more paralax scrolling would have been nice...

Beside that i´s very big fun on the jag, even more if you are two players!

Best regards,

Christian

Jaguar has the best version of Raiden. Only downside is the fairly large info-panel on the right that takes up way too much of the playing field IMO.

Yes, but it´s only because the height of the original arcade monitor, so you do not have to turn your TV to the side :)

The Lynx version is also very nice... on the Atari Falxon exists a beta of Raiden which is close to the Jaggy one.

Atari Falcon exists a beta of Raiden which is close to the Jaggy one.

I heard that the developers stopped the Falcon version to make the Panther version which was then turned into the Jaguar version.

Yeah, I know. But so did Atari, so they should´ve taken it into consideration back then

Porting an arcade game that uses a vertically oriented monitor is never an easy task. Witness all the complaints about the Pac-Man and Donkey Kong playfields being too wide on the 8-bit consoles of the day. I think Atari did pretty well under the circumstances.

The Jaguar version is pretty good. I'm torn between it and the Genesis version. The Genesis FM synth sound hardware is very similar to the arcade game's, so the music is more authentic compared to the Jaguar's MOD arrangements.

The SNES version is eh. Pretty to look at, but it shows how under-equipped the SNES is for handling lots of on-screen objects with any appreciable speed.

We really wanted to include a vertical option for Gorf Classic on the Jaguar but the trouble

to have both was a bit much. Re-proportioning to get it to a horizontal was hard enough.

Should have just used the blitter to flip and rotate and stretch it. But it's not easy.

You have to have all the player controls handle both orientations and its a lot more work

than not. It would be easier to code a seperate version for each just reversing coord on the

movement and input subs and the collisions. Dont forget the text routines need to now draw

letter down and at 90 degrees instead of straigth across.

I actually started a rewrite that would do it with the blitter using all four directions( what the

hell...might as well, its only a nother couple lines of code and thenthere are Gorf cocktails

that do flip the monitor.). If I work on it it could be done with out to much annoyance.

If anyone ever wants to do this....if you plan ahead it can be a lot simpler using the OPL and

the blitter. Again...it's not the easiest thing to attempt.

Oh and Jaguar gets the nod on Raiden just on the color shading differences alone.

Look at the various explosions. The Jaguars is much more smoke like than the others

as one would expect.

The PS version includes Raiden 1 and 2 whereas the Jag version is only part 1... I think they are pretty even graphically as well. The PS probably has better sound though.

The Raiden Project on the PSX is the closest to the arcade original. It's probably the best port, IMO, though the Jag version is excellent as well. My only problem with the Jag version is that everything seems compacted, and thus it's sometimes hard to slide between bullets that really shouldn't pose a big threat. But overall the Jag version is quite well done, and very playable.

Yeah, the Jaguar version is great, but if you are looking for the closest to the arcade versions, then you have to go with the PSX and FM Towns Marty ports, in that order.

The Jag port is great, but most of the graphics have been redrawn, sometimes for the better, others for the worst.

Jaguar Raiden is the only home version I've ever played, and close enough to the arcade version to satisfy me, and then the bounus of some graphics (like asteroids) to be redrawn better, and the music improved to stereo. Since it's a great port, if not perfect, I've still had no reason to pick Raiden up for another system, including the Lynx, which also looks increcible considering the res and color limits of the Lynx. The side display is a little too big though, I agree, even if you compare the horizontal width of the Jaguar version to the PSX version, it's been cut off about an inch too much for that aspect ration even. They should have had the display removable, or sperated to either side of the game window and the info split up on both sides, and still smaller displays combined. I do think the aspect ratio is important, for those who are used to the arcade version, becuase it does play differently depending on how more vertical and horizontal room you have to navigate.
