SPACE GIRAFFE launches on Wednesday! WOOT!

Recommended Posts

Finally, a reason to get a 360.

I have a couple of other reasons I'd want one, but yeah, this has quickly become my #1. :D

Having never played it, I'm not as hyped as many seem to be. That being said, of course I'll check it out. We'll see :)

OXM gave it 2/10. Minter digged up the idiot reviewer who barely played the game (no achievements, very low score) and blasted OXM Dan review. Gotta love Minter.

Oh I've played Tempest plenty (could get to the invisible levels back in the day).

But this guy aint Mr. Tempest.. he's Mr. Tempest 2000. Big difference in my book :)

Thank god, I like T2K way more. :D

And so do I :P Seriously.

That being said, it's like Stevie Ray Vaughans version of Hendrix's Little Wing. Some may think it's better, but at the end of the day, it's still just a remake ;)

i've never played Space Giraffe.

Would prove to be a little difficult as well, considering it isn't coming out until the 22nd. :P

Does anyone have a link to a scan or text of the offending OXM review of the game? It's been a couple of weeks since I've gotten myself riled up in a good old fashioned geek rage.

I think this is it...

'Space Giraffe is NOT Tempest!' screams the instructions in Jeff's 360 music visualizer, Minter's latest interactive audiovisual orgy. Okay, but Space Giraffe does take nearly all its cues from Atari's classic coin-op (which Minter has reworked before).

As in Tempest, you're an abstract creature on the edge of an electric grid floating in space, relentlessly basting the geometric creatures that shimmy up its lanes. Giraffe enhances that letting you jump over enemies, steer your shots, and ram baddies off the playfield, but user-friendliness has been thrown out in the name of psychedelic presentation.

You'll frequently die because you couldn't pick out the pulsing assassin from the wrapped playfield floating over the throbbing LSD nightmare that is the background, which makes this game uniquely aggravating.

With incredibly poor visibility (apparently by design) and a thumping electronic soundtrack peppered with sophomoric sound effects, Space Giraffe offers a generous 100 levels of damn-near-unplayable technoslop.

- Dan Amrich (Senior editor, Official Xbox Magazine)

+ Unlike anything you've ever seen (except Tempest).

- Too visually noisy to figure out what going on.

- Actually made us angry when we played it.

? Is this a failed game or a failed art experiment?

The Verdict 2.0 - BROKEN

Just really bad. Lacks a single redeeming quality, or it's busted to varying degrees in its own design, quality or basic functionality. No gamer of any stripe should bother.

well between this post and those in the Live Arcade thread, and that fact that most of the Live Arcade games are remakes of older games, I can't imagine that I could get that confused...wow. People have been talking about how great this game is, how the hell do they know if the game isn't out??? It sounded like this game was released before and is getting re-released on live.

I haven't seen people saying that, more like eager anticipation knowing what this guy has produced in the past.

Your post was like if you made a post asking for help in some game, and one of us posted in that thread saying I don't know, I've never played that game before.

What's the point of doing that? I understand what you meant now, but it just seemed pointless when first read.

If you play Space Giraffe like you played Tempest or Tempest 2000, then you won't get very far, you probably won't get any achievements in the game and will end up with a pitiful score similar to OXM Dan.

Play the tutorial, read the instructions on how to play, don't think of it as a 'Remake of Tempest', because there are too many differences between SG and Tempest.

The only reference I ever did to Space Giraffe above was saying that I'll buy it, but I'm not rolling head over heels for it unlike most everyone else is (it seems). That being said if it kicks ass I'll be the first to say it.

But just to make it very clear, the whole "Tempest" discussion was a whole other tangent.. it didn't really have anything to do with Space Giraffe :P I never even assumed SG was a Tempest remake (aside from it being from the same guy who made a Tempest remake).

And as far as achievements go when it comes out.. sure, we'll throw down the gauntlet! :D I'm "N3146" on live if anyone here wants to challenge on it..or any arcade game for that matter :) We'll see what's pitiful and what's not when the time comes ;)
