A.J. Franzman #1 Posted August 21, 2007 This morning I saw a Colecovision system in a thrift store. The console, controllers and power supply are marked $8. Is this a good deal for an untested system? I would only get it to trade or re-sell. Also, the following games: Mr. Do!'s Castle, Montezuma's Revenge, Zaxxon, and a label-less Parker Brothers cart, $1 each. Does anyone want me to pick these up in trade for Atari 2600 items from my want list (see first link in my sig below), or cash?
Christophero Sly #2 Posted August 21, 2007 (edited) Grab it. That lot is easily worth $12. You shouldn't have any trouble selling or trading Mr. Do!'s Castle or Montezuma's Revenge. Edited August 21, 2007 by Christophero Sly
joeybastard #3 Posted August 21, 2007 (edited) Mr. Do's Castle alone is worth much more than $12, I'll buy it off you for $20 if you don't want it! Edited August 21, 2007 by joeybastard
Jess Ragan #4 Posted August 21, 2007 Geez! ColecoVisions go for $40 or more on eBay, and you're asking if it's worth eight bucks?! I would have been all over this deal like flies on very seductive manure.
+Psionic #5 Posted August 21, 2007 Yeah, I'd grab it. Even if there's something wrong with the console, it's probably something you can easily fix...if not, you can sell the controllers and power supply themselves for $20. The Mr. Do!'s Castle and Montezuma's Revenge carts will also net you $20 each. You're talking at least $50-$60 in trade/resale value.
jboypacman #6 Posted August 21, 2007 Thats a great deal and it comes with Mr.Do's castle and those other games! I wish i could find deals like that.
AussieAtari #7 Posted August 21, 2007 Buy it now, sell the carts and then buy a multi-cart and you are in for a world of Coleco goodness. Great games and an easy console to do an A/V mod on for wonderful clear picture and fake stereo sound.
A.J. Franzman #8 Posted August 21, 2007 (edited) Thanks for all the advice, everyone! As you've probably guessed, I'm not into ColecoVision, so I really didn't know what value they have. I picked up the console, and a slightly different selection of games (there were more when I went back, and I misread the price before -- it was really $2 each -- so I left Carnival, Venture, Zaxxon and three label-less carts there). Everything appears to work. I've posted this find in the Marketplace forum. Edited August 22, 2007 by A.J. Franzman
Technosis #9 Posted August 22, 2007 Nice find A.J. Couple of things, I'm amazed that a ColecoVision actually made it to the floor of the thrift, and I'm impressed that you were able to "go back and get it". I my area it would have lasted about 10 minutes.
A.J. Franzman #10 Posted August 22, 2007 Thanks. Today is "seniors discount day" at that store, so it was fairly packed, but I guess seniors around here aren't into Colecovision, and the other regulars probably stay away to avoid the crowd.
Bruce Tomlin #11 Posted August 22, 2007 Hell, seeing ANY CV cart for less than five bucks at a thrift store is pretty much a miracle to me. Yes, it was definitely worth it. CVs may have some hardware problems (bad power switch, bad video DRAMs, bad controller ports), but they are well known and fixable. And it's a pretty nice system which died before its time due to the worthless fad of trying to turn a video game system into a "real computer" (instead turning your company into a "real bankrupcy"), just as the IBM PC had come out.
