Just ordered my first Homebrews :)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have just ordered my first set of homebrews, made a bit of extra cash on a motorcycle restoration so thought i'd splash out. It's great, feels like ordering new games from the silica shop catalogue in the '80's.

Anyhow I got Lady Bug, Space Treat, This planet sucks! & Dark mage.

What do you folks reckon on the selections? Wanted to try dark mage as I remember sitting with my dad typing in a game on our Aquarius from a magazine that seems very similar(I never really got into computers much in the 80's, or now for that matter).

The only other homebrew I have ordered ever is Travi last week, so this all feels new and cool to me.

Best regards,

Chris

Excellent man... that is awesome. Keep those restoration projects going so you can get more :)

Lady Bug is da bomb... what an amazing job done by the programmers. It's gotta be on of the best games done on the Atari.

I've not tried the others you got... but If I may make some more recommendations, Thrust, Oystron, Wolfenstein, Climber 5, Conquest of Mars, Star Fire are also great games.

If you like puzzles, AStar, Okie Dokie, 4-play, Stratogems are great too.

Have fun... enjoy the new games. I can tell that once I bought a Homebrew, I was hooked. I've bought a bunch since.

Dark Mage is really good. A really solid text adventure (especially for a system that can't natively do text and has no keyboard :) )

Of the ones you mentioned Lady Bug is the only one I own and as was said by the other poster it is BEYOND good and probably the best arcade port to the VCS. I will second Wolfenstein although it is technically a hack and is sold as a hack in the AA Store (I believe it has enough new features to be sold as a homebrew) and will suggest Phantom/Pirate, Climber 5, Conquest of Mars and SeaWolf as considerations for your next purchase. Those are my most played homebrews.

LadyBug is awesome! Space Treat in my understanding plays alot like the old arcade game Space Zap(?), i havnt played Dark Mage, and This Planet Sucks! is good and is based off a old Tatio Arcade game.

If you do pick up any others try out SeaWolf and Gunfight two awesome games. :)

Space Treat is more like Freeway (or Frogger). Vault Assualt is similar to Space Zap. This Planet Sucks is based on Lunar Rescue.

I'd have to put Lady Bug in my top three, along with Thrust+ and Medieval Mayhem. There are quite a few other excellent homebrews though. Bang-for-your-buck-wise, it's hard to beat the 2005 MiniGame MultiCart (the port of M-4 on it alone is worth the price). Strat-O-Gems Deluxe is one of the best puzzle games on the system, and if you're looking to do a little early Christmas shopping, there's always Reindeer Rescue. Star Fire and Fall Down are also outstanding - Star Fire being the best first-person space shooter on the 2600, and Fall Down being one of the best head-to-head games.

Of those games, I'm another who only has Lady Bug. It is superb and will amaze you with what can be done on a 2600.

I'd recommend the others I have - Go Fish, Seawolf and Fall Down.

Space Treat Deluxe is one of my favorite Homebrews. I play it all the time, reminds me a lot of Frogger but has a few twists :)

I recommend Power Off!, Thrust and Bugs Bunny (prototype reproduction at Atari2600.com) as a few of my favorites but my current #1 choice would have to be Elevators Amiss!! That game is Awesome

Like everyone said, Ladybug is a five star title. The game captures the arcade perfectly. Dark Mage is also quite good (and cheap!), and well worth the money. If I recall correctly, This Planet Sucks is a port of the old Lunar Rescue arcade game. Space Treat is pretty good too, kind of like space frogger.

You'll enjoy the new games. There are SO many good homebrews that they are eclipsing the original 'best' games on the system in terms of fun. Enjoy!

Lady Bug is my favorite out of the games you listed that you bought. You should also check out Thrust+ in the future, and the holiday carts. Speaking of which I just remembered something about Toyshop Trouble.
