Just got a Gamecube.. Any good game recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hey gang. Most know me as an Atari fanboy but I recently picked up a Gamecube and am now looking to pick up a few good titles. So far I have Metroid Prime (wicked BTW) and Sonic Gems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the kinds of games I like:

- spaceship shooters or shooters where I am flying and shooting

- arcade action games

- driving games

Cheers!!

For space shooters you gotta go with Star Fox: Assault. If your a star wars fan you will also enjoy the rouge squadron games a lot too! For driving games Mario Kart Double Dash was a lot of fun for me, not sure if your into Mario games though. Can't really help you out with arcade action games though, I'm sure someone else could though.

Metroid Prime 2 is a MUST HAVE as well, kick ASS game.

Second Sight is highly underrated and highly AWESOME.

Resident Evil 0, ReMake, and 4 are also must haves.

Baldur's Gate is a good arcade action/rpg style game.

Super Mario Sunshine is great as well, and very underappreciated in the Mario universe.

Zelda Twilight Princess will blow your mind.

Well, I'll try not to ignore you gaming style here.

Spy Hunter wasn't too bad of a game and can be found for really cheap. A bit under appreciated.

F-Zero is wicked fast.

Ikaruga is a classic shooter.

Kirby's AirRide is a pretty fun racing game.

Hope that helps.

Rougue Squadrun part 2 is the BEST GC game out there. Part 3 was ruined, they shouldn't have tried to make it better, they should have just left it alone!

It doesn't fit into the genres you listed, but the Pikmin games are really really fun IMO. I would put them a GC "must play" list.

Metroid Prime is THE game to own. Good call getting that one.

I recommend PN03. And get laughed at.

But it's a good game if you ask me, and it's cheap.

I'd describe it as Berzerk 3D.

F-Zero, StarFox Assault, and Resident Evil 4 are all good choices.

Ikaruga is NOT a classic shooter. It's equal parts modern pattern-based bullet-cloud shooter and color-matching puzzle game. I STILL can't figure out what the appeal is, other than "Hey, it's a scrolling shooter!"

But I don't like Gradius either, so my opinion isn't exactly that of a "mainstream" shooter fan.

I'll second the Pikmin recommendation. A lot of people pass on it because it sounds a little lame from the cover description, but it's actually a lot of fun.

If you have any interest in RPGs try these:

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (Deep story.)

Tales of Symphonia (Great combat system. You have real time control of your main character. The support AIs are also pretty intelligent.)

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (Another deep story. Combat is card based. Difficult to master, but I enjoyed it.)

I'd also recommend Custom Robo, even though it only got average reviews. It's a build-em, battle-em game. I think of it as Pokemon with Gundams. Most places have it for around $7.

I second the idea of PN03.

Great game, tough to master, but fun to play. I'd actually like to know if there was ever a strategy book for this one.

Resident Evil 4 is amazing. really pushed the system to the limits.

Luigi's Mansion is good

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is downright scary

Donkey Konga: Jungle Beat is a lot of fun, and a darned good workout too!

Well you need to pick up the Midway collections and Namco 50th Anniversary collection. And I really like both Alien Hominid and Rampage: Total Destruction.

Although it is a modern shooter, try Chaos Field.

P.N.03 (it is kinda like a 3rd person shmup, not everyone can get used to the control, but I love it once you get into a rhythm)

Killer 7

Viewtiful Joe I & II great looking beat'em ups, with fast paced action. The third one you can miss.

If you want good arcade action or shmup on GC you gonna need the Gameboy-Player, then pop in a

Astro Boy, Gunstar Heroes, Iridion II or Gradius Galaxies.

I agree with almost everything everyone posted, and I posted a question similar to yours 1/2 a year ago. I have had so much fun with my Gamecube since then but I think I will list some games I had to try on my own that you might like:

Alien Hominid

Ray Man 3

Star Fox Adventures (this is not a flying game but fun and Rare's last GC title)

Sonic Heroes (this really feels like a 3d sonic)

Dead to rights great game and get it for 4 bucks at Gamestop

Summoner Goddes reborn (another cheap but fun game)

Sphinx and the curse of the mummy (the best 4 dollars you will ever spend)

Any of the james bond games except rogue agent which I dont have...

Someone mentioned Spyhunter, but I didnt like it... I also didnt go crazy for the bongo games, but YMMV

I did like Defender give it a try

Soul calibur

Fzero gx, Extreme G3 both good futuristic racers. Need for speeds undergrounds are good, and so is Crazy Taxi. I really wish they made a Beetle Adventure Racing for the Gamecube, but I can always playit on my N64. Mario Kart Double dash is a must have.

One grea thing is you can pick up so many fun games for 10 dollars and less that it is the best time (money/fun ratio) to start a cube collection. I purchased a GC in May thinking I would get a Wii by the end of the summer, but I'm putting it off a while longer because there is so much I missed out on with the Cube. I have no idea why so many people think this platform doesn't have good games... IMO there are more top quality gamnes for the GCthan the ps2 if you take into consideration that most multi platform titles are better on the GC and the GC has 1st party games that are timeless.

Beyond Good and Evil! You must get this game. Stay clear of the PS2 version...the Xbox and PC versions look the best but are hard to find not to mention the PC version has nasty nasty bugs that can prevent completion of the game without some 3rd party patchings. Besides, the Cube version overall plays the best IMO as the controls for the game feel like they were made for the Cube controller.

The two Star Wars games - Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike - are both excellent arcadey space shooters.

For arcade action games, another vote for Ikaruga. Both Monkey Ball games are a blast as well.

RE4 is one of the best games of the generation. If you like action/adventures at all, you need to get it.
