(UPDATE W/ PIC)Defender: another new obsession

So now I've been playing Defender all day for the Colecovision. It's another game that I used to never give the time of day because I always thought that it was hard. I started playing and after a few games of pure suckage I started to get better. I went from getting 59,950 to my new high score of 432,400. I looked it up on Twin Galaxies and it places me at #4. I definatly could have gone on longer but my dang wife called me and in the process of me answering the phone and trying to talk to her I lost 7 lives. I tried to get a picture of my score but it only displays on the TV for a few seconds and then goes back to the title screen. Next time I will have my camera ready to go. I know I said this before in my Donkey Kong high score post but why isn't their a Coleco HSC?

 

UPDATE: since this post started I am now able to score millions of points well surpassing the #1 position on TG. below is a picture of my score after I rolled it 3 times already.

UPDATE: As you may have already read I've been playing Defender lately. It has become my new obsession! I have done what I thought would never be possible for me to do, I have rolled the score. I took 4 pictures before the score rolled so that I could have some evidence of my accomplishment but alas the pictures are all blurry. Defender is such a fast paced game that you don't get any time to rest. After I got past 1,000,000 I very sadly just turned my game off. I would have liked to continue but unfortunatly I had other places to be.

Defender has been my obsession several times... 'Course I'm talking about the arcade game though. Every couple of years I get the itch to really play it well and have a new goal (i.e. come up with a technique to survive free space, etc.). I've only played the colecovision version in passing, on emulators though. But yeah, Defender. It's a mans game

Defender is a great game. I'm in the process of modding my MAME cab to have a Defender button layout. Good stuff.

 

Oh, and I prefer the Atari 8-bit/5200 version. Stargate/Defender2 for the 2600 is also quite good.

The left button fires, the right button blows everything off the screen, and the 0(zero) button warps you but I never use that button. I've never really played the arcade version just alittle when I was young so I can't compare it but I love the Coleco version. I start twitching when I can't get my defender fix for the day. I was playing for 6 hours yesterday while my wife was at work that way I didn't have to hear her yelling at me to stop playing.

But seriously, congrats on the CV defender scores! Nice going!

 

I am a major fan of the Defender genre. That said, when I need my "defender fix" I choose Stargate on MAME. I can't say enough about this game, I consider it the "high water mark" for the classic shoot-em ups. It was so advanced for it's time, what with the incredible menu system that allowed operators to tweak the game to match the skill level of the players. If you like CV Defender I STRONGLY recommend that you check out Stargate (also known as Defender II) on MAME.

Here is a picture I had my wife take before she went to work. At this point I had already rolled the score 3 times and was working on my fourth. The score shows 840,450 but since I rolled it three times the score is really 3,840,450. As you can see I still have 5 lives and three bombs. I actually have way more then 5 lives but it will only show 5. I could have probably kept on going all night but after playing for over 3 hours I started to get tired and hungry so I just turned it off. I need to get a digital camcorder so that I can record my games and put them on youtube for your viewing pleasures. Just thought I would show you guys the picture cause I was finally able to get it to turn out. Enjoy!

Yeah I plan on it once I get off my lazy ass and go buy some blank tapes. Unfortunatly I am on an island in Alaska and the only store we have is Wal-Mart but it's 45 minutes away and after work I'm always too lazy to go there. I'll probably go this weekend and pick up some tapes. Then I gotta take my VCR out of my daughters room and hook it up to my gamin TV, get the wife and kids out of the house so that I have no distractions and play my little heart out for hours on end.
