MODDING the MAME thing

What are the philosophical differences between modding an Atari and MAME-ing a classic arcade machine?

You mod an Atari - it's still an Atari.

 

Unless you do something rediculous like put the guts of a ZX81 into a 400 or something like that.

 

On the other hand, pulling the guts out of an arcade machine is stealing it's identity, even though functionality-wise it might still do the exact same thing (e.g. play Galaga).
