found an atari at goodwill

Recommended Posts

As far as the Atari 2600, at least it went to a good home. It didn't get thrown out, or have some little uncivilized brat drooling all over it and shoving a grilled cheese sandwich in the cartridge port. I don't know what to tell you about the Pac Man carts

yes it is deadmeow it's with me and im taking great care of it

i also had a case of atari games which i purchases a few months ago

at a salvation army for 7 bucks and i got it for 50% off actually

it has over 20 games and the manuals are on the side of the case

so i think im set i just have to test it haven't had time with school and all :)

oh singletooth i don't think it was stealing

because they were going to throw it out eventually so i look at it as

grabbing a nice peace of treasure plus giving it a new home followed by a lovely make-over

:rolling:  ;) :lolblue:

one time i went to a fleamarket and this person wanted 200 bucks for the atari system with a few games

i was like who does this guy think he is

oh check this it one guy (a wetback ) ;) had an original nes with about 8 games and i asked him how much he wouls sell it for he then looked at me and said 80 bucks my goodness

I picked up a MINT ATARI 5200 with 5 MIOB games for $20 at a garage sale.

I bet the controllers don't work hahahahahahahah :D

they work as if it were brand new. he only played with it twice before he put it away and got an NES.

These types of threads are always interesting. I love to see the self-righteous perfect people foaming at the mouth! BTW, "wetback" is a mean spirited word for Mexicans, but Mexican is a nationality, not a race. (Wonder why nobody ever gets called racist for bashing Canadians). You should just be nice to everybody (in my opinion).

actually, "wetback" is used towards any central american that crosses the boarder by swimming via the rio grande (thus, they are called "wetbacks") theyre backs are wet because of the swimming they have to endure.

There's an echo in here.

Wetback is a derogatory term for a person that has immigrated illegally to the United States. The term is based on the presumption that the person in question swam or waded across the Rio Grande to get into the United States, getting his or her back wet in the process. The English term was first used in 1920s and saw official use by the U.S. Government in 1954 with Operation Wetback.

Our local WalMart has a section of the parking lot, about the size of two or three motorhomes that is the designated nanodump. The "goodwill" box is the anchor point of it all and the around it the mountain grows and grows and changes shape and size, the least popular items migrate to the center and get bogged down under the weight of all the other stuff. I asked the cop what's the deal, he said something about class maintenance!??! What is the world does that mean? At any rate, I was scrounging through it to get some decent jackets and stuff. Yeh, sure enough there were 2 2600 units at the bottom. I couldn't get them out because the RF cable was entertwined with a stroller and probably other electronic stuff.

I got a lot to say on this topic...

I would have just sat there and untangled the cables, if possible -- I wouldn't have been going home without those 2600s (even though I have 5 already, plus a Flashback2.) Otherwise, I would have just straight up yanked that shit out -- replacement RF cables can be had for cheap, on eBay... or you could A/V mod the consoles. It'd be best to take 'em even if you already had several, because some... really... really... dumb "family" might pick 'em up... and eventually throw 'em out in frustration when they can't make them work.

As far as Goodwill goes, I've discussed here how I unsuccessfully tried to get them to cut me a deal on a bunch of IIe/C64 disks I found (even going all the way to the district manager)...but they ended up in the trash anyway, because they wouldn't budge from their outrageous prices. Now, I have no reservations about taking anything from them (although I've never tried.) The CEO of Goodwill is a very rich man... but very little (if any) of that revenue goes to the people with disabilities that they're purportedly trying to help. If they have 501[c][3] status, they need to be stripped of it.

As far as taking abandoned donations... they try to scare people out of it down here. Behind the local Goodwill stores by the back door, there's a sign that says "Donations left here are for the support of Goodwill programs. The taking of items is theft and will be prosecuted." Wait a minute -- dumping is illegal (no matter what it is), but they'll prosecute whoever takes from that same illegally dumped stuff (most of which would have been discarded anyway?) What the fuck kind of doublespeak is THAT? If anything, you save them from having to pay for a trash pickup.

If you were bold enough to go through the pile during business hours and found, say, a Vectrex or something, taking it inside the store and asking to purchase it isn't really an option, because (at least around here) they'll take anything without a price tag and send it to the back room for "processing", and it won't be available for sale until the next day. Besides, they wouldn't know what a Vectrex is, and they'll throw it out, thinking it's a broken TV. Since the most desirable result is "you" taking it home, go ahead and take it, but try not to get caught. To clear your conscience, go back a few days later and donate a nominal sum, say $5 (even $10 is a good deal on that)... they (usually) have a cash collection box in-store.

But I guess you could say I'm not much better than the ones who take abandoned donations (even though they're legally considered "trash")... Some of the items I buy at Goodwill, I re-sell on eBay for a profit. I don't find that morally objectionable at all, because stuff you buy from a secondhand store is also part of the free market -- once you buy it, it's yours and you can sell it for whatever someeone else will pay. I keep all the gaming stuff I buy, but I've discovered hidden value in other things...

Unless you work for them, in which case you are specificly forbidden to sell anything you buy, and have to sign a paper acknowledging that you will be terminated if caught. They consider that theft of profit.

You could have just cut the rf cords off, they are repairable.

If there's no price on an item at the GWs around here the cashier usually just makes one up. Its usually a good one too. Recently though on certain items, especially electronics stuff, they've been writing the price on it with marker. Fortunately whatever they're marking it with come off with alcohol. The NES carts at the one I goto have the price written in green marker on them.
