Some games only boot with new batteries?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed on my Lynx II some games only boot with brand new fresh batteries (example Crystal Mines or Chips Challenge) then other games will always boot even if the battery is almost dead. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I have. My Road Blasters won't get past the starting screen when I run my Lynx on an adapter, but runs fine on batteries! The adapter isn't an original one, but one with lower amperage (too light for a Lynx I guess). Strange but true. :?

I don't have an AC adapter for my Lynx to test that with for comparison. Do you have a Lynx I or II?

I only use batteries in my LynxII (the AC adapter plug stopped working)

I think if you have a problem with Only NEW batteries working with your Lynx, the reason is you are using weak batteries. Most AA are 1.2 - 1.5 volts. But with portable devices like Digital Cameras and handhelds like the Lynx, you want to use batteries that have a lot of mAh (mili-amp hours?). Usually you'll see a rating on the battery for it's strength. Most disposable batteries are kinda weak. Personally, when I play my lynx for a while I will notice the power light blinking. then i slowly increase the brightness. Eventually i can't see much of anything and then the Lynx turns itself off. Some games dont load if the little red light blinks or flickers a little bit. That usually clues me to throw the batteries on the charger and call it quits.

**NOTE**I Highly discourage people from wasting $$$ on "disposable" batteries. I started using rechargeable Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries. A 4-pack of 2500 mAh batteries + charger may run you about $20, but you can use them over and over again after you recharge. I usually charge the batteries overnight if i see the power light starting to flicker a little bit. (It can take up to 7hrs to fully charge 4 batteries using the charger i have). FYI , I bought mine at a store near me called Batteries Plus.

There are some new MiNh batteries available that you can charge in just 15 minutes with a special charger. I bought some of these about a year ago and they work great! My charger and batteries were made by Varta but recently I have seen similar batteries from other manufacturers also.

I've got a bunch of these as well and they are awesome. The ones I have are Rayovac IC3. The only problem I had with rechargeables and the Lynx is that on my Lynx I the batteries at the bottom of the well are a snug fit and have to be shaken out, and at the top I had to slightly bow the battery contacts outward to make contact with the batteries.

yeah i have that same problem with my LynxII somewhat. I have a couple batteries that seem a little thicker and the + ends aren't as good, so when all 6 are in, they almost get stuck. But when i had a LynxI the batteries would get stuck a lot easier, and I would have to shake it to get them out too.

karri - yeah i think ive seen those 15min batteries and chargers. but im hesitant to spend the $. It usually seems to be true that if the charge is too fast, the batteries go dead quicker.

My experience is that these batteries last better than old NiCd and MiNh batteries. So far all my 15-min batteries work perfectly. But they did cost a lot more than ordinary batteries. (I only have 8 batteries in total. And they are mainly in camera-use. Occasionally in the Lynx.)
