Gamestop, home of sealed and pristine games.

Readers Digest version: Gamestop tells employees not to strip any copies of Halo 3.

Now if only they'd expand that to cover all games.

LOL

It's getting so bad at some Gamestops that even the games that are on the wall behind the counter are out of the cases in envelopes next to the case! :x

Stupid bastards!

I must have a good local Gamestop here then. The one I frequent at the mall nearest me has always given me factory sealed brand new games when I buy them. That is...if I buy them on release day or day after. Only time I had them not give me a sealed game was when I bought the last copy of Grim Grimoire they had. It had the stickers and crap on it. But...I swapped the case later with some sports game I didn't care about.

I'd go to the one in the mall more if the manager wasn't a gigantic douche (the little fat one named Jason). I had problems with him when I worked at GameXChange, and I'd love to kick his ass all over the mall.

I go to the one over on 91st street, it has nicer employees and generally a better selection.

Fine by me! Gamestop is usually my last stop when shopping, because I strongly disagree with their "We can open stuff and still sell it as new" policy. Just because it was never sold doesn't make it new-- once the cellophane is broken, it's an opened game and I'd better get a price break because of it.

And after that, you sure as hell better not tell me "Well, if you're worried about it, for an extra $2 we'll put an extended warranty on your game."

I've noticed that too in the stores around here.

I've had them pull out the opened cases and start fishing around for a disk after the "would you like to buy it used for $2.50 less" speech, and I've said no. Then they gave me the extended warranty bit when I said I wanted a NEW game, and I said "You've got to be kidding me. I've got a better idea - I'll keep my $2 and you go and get a factory sealed NEW game." Assholes :x

I'm astonished at the whole mess.. it basically amounts to buying used games for more than new... and GameStop's regular prices aren't cheap to begin with!

one of the local Game Stop stores tried to sell me a "new" Command and Conquer bundle with all the game up to Yuri's Revenge. The trick is, they didn't have the new box out--they had a converted DVD case out. they had the jewel box and stuff behind the counter, but the liners were typewritten like someone had lost the originals and they needed to make a replacement.

They kept saying it was new, but I wasn't buying that. I told them I already had the games but I've lost my serial numbers.

the response?

"Just use a keygen".

Sorry, pal, that doesn't work on Strike Team or Westwood Online. that was the whole point of getting a new serial, so that I'd have a unique one that I could play on Strike Team with.

Another thing that aggravates me is they're only offering $70 for fat PSP trade ins. I'm not planning to trade mine in, but still if you actually search for a bargain, generally you can't touch a used PSP for under $100. There's a $30 difference there, and paying operating costs ain't got jack to do with it. Used PSP fats go fro $129 at retail anyway.

I'm talking about the Gamestop at the Promenade Mall Greg. If that is the same one you're talking about, I've never had a problem there. I call them on release day...ask if they have whatever game I'm looking for in stock and for sale yet. They ask if I had a preorder. I say nope...never do. They say its okay as they always have a few extras and they do have them in, or not today but we should tomorrow..etc. I go in that afternoon, ask for the game I called about, and they pull a factory fresh sealed one without a sticker in site for me. That is the way it should be and that is how it has always been. In fact when I bought Elebits they asked if I had it preordered then too. I said no again. But they went ahead and gave me one of the plush elebit bonuses since apparently they had about 3 of those come in but not a single person preordered Elebits at that store. So...they game me one of them. I thought that was most cool and I appreciated the offer!

In addition, there is a fairly new EBgames located at 71st and Memorial which usually has a good selection of used stuff. I think because they aren't the easiest to get to due to where they are located in that area, and because with Woodland Hills Mall less than a mile down the road people forget that EBgames is even there.

Yeah, I was talking about the GameStop in Woodland mall. I've never been to the one in Promenade. Honestly, the only reason I ever even went to Promenade was for their awesome incense shop and Argon City, but since they're gone, I very rarely ever go there, unless I stop to eat at that Carl's Jr. nearby.

Check out the one on 91st and Delaware sometime. It's right next to that Neighborhood Market there on Delaware. It's easily my favorite one in town.

Oddly, that particular EB games is now another GameStop. They're becoming like Starbucks. Hell, there's even a Starbucks right next to it!

Eventually they will all say Gamestop. Gamestop bought out EB about 2 years ago I believe. Some of the shops still have the EBgames signage but the receipts all say Gamestop non the less. I have been to the small one at 91st and Delaware. I frequently find used games there and newer releases that the others have ran out of. But sadly, they practice the habit of selling the last shelf opened copy as new with stickers...ugh.

Aw, c'mon guys.... I bought a car 2 months ago and it had 17 miles on the odometer and it was sold to me as NEW! If car dealerships can do it, why can't EB/GS?????

;)

Once you bust the seal on a PC game, the serial number can be stolen...

I don't care if its new or used myself, but if I pay the "new" price, I expect a new game.

I have to wonder how much people would start crying if Gamestop left their games sealed, but kept *everything* in locked cases that required an employee to stop what he's doing, walk over, open the case, and stand there while you decide if you want the game or not.

Personally, that's why i go to Gamestop, i like to be able to browse stuff. I ask to see the disc before it goes in the case, and if it's a beat-up copy, i don't buy it. Simple as that, and it requires like an extra three seconds of effort on my part, rather than waiting around for the aforementioned unlocking/relocking process. Then when i get home i save even more time not having to deal with shrinkwrap and three security tags.

They don't strip games to fuck with you, they strip games because people steal shit. Simple as that. Maybe someday it'll be economically viable to put sealed, brand-new copies of games next to a door fifteen feet from the only out-of-shape employee standing behind a waist-high counter, but i wouldn't count on it.

I also hate the stolen serial number thing. Several game stores often leave the PC games that required unique serial number for online game. I'd bet all of them are "used" up by people who downloaded the game and didn't want to buy a new one for the serial number.

All they have to do is leave out one empty box and leave the sealed one locked up for when you actually buy it. I don't see how that would take longer than them putting the disc back in the case for a "new" game. In fact this should save them time as they don't have to strip out all the games.

I'd rather buy my game at Wal-Mart then Gamestop any day. Gamestop has created a monopoly in my area and their practices drive me crazy. At Wal-Mart I have never been asked if I want to pre-order something that isn't coming out for a year (or tomorrow for that matter), buy a magazine, or told that the game I am buying would be better played on another system (because the system I am buying it for is not made be company A.) If having to get someone to unlock a case gets me through without that hassle then it is well worth it.

Thank god we've got Wal-Mart, free of monopolistic tendencies and crazy business practices. :)

Exactly. There is no need to strip every copy. Just the store display one. You want the game, you take the store display to the counter, they give you a sealed one, the store display goes back on the display rack. Or the tag method where every store display copy has "take one" tags associated with them.

Their current policy as it stands it stupid, wastefull, and unncessarly destructive for no good reason.

For groceries I go to Kroger or Publix. For clothes... I go somewhere other then Wal-Mart. I think that is a no-brainer. I don't like Wal-Mart at all. But, when it comes to video games I would rather go to Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, etc., etc. before going to Gamestop. Wal-Mart was simply an example of where you can get your game without hassle.

We had many stores to choose from in my area at one time. We had GameStop, EB Games, KB Toys, Software Etc., Player's Choice, and Rhino Games. EB Games, Software Etc, and Rhino Games were all bought by GameStop. Player's Choice had to close it's doors and the last time I bought a video game at KB Toys was when they had all their Jaguar games in the discount bin. The last time I went in there I didn't see any games. I hated GameStop before but when they bought out Rhino Games it was the last straw. I will not deal with them ever again.

That's essentially what Wal-Mart does. I'm not their biggest fan, but it seems to work for them.

I know people steal stuff, but after so many people messing with the game on the shelf, it looks pretty ratty. Why should I have

to take home a beaten-up "new" game? The lock-up methd is fine by me... I very seldom make my decision to buy a game based

on the back of the box.

I can't even imagine why this isn't the policy in the first place.

Why does such a crap series have to be so special for gamestop to stop their "tradition?" *sighs*.

At any rate, they should leave all games sealed. Open the plastic, its no longer new. ALL their games (except for halo 3 now) I considered used, for this reason.
