I was surprised at how good a conversion Mario Bros is. I got it after I already owned the 7800 version -- which I hate, because it's just slow and clunky...but the overall gameplay of the 2600 version is pretty enjoyable...

I was always the opposite for I prefer the 7800 version over the 2600 ;)

The 2600 Mario Bros. was THE definitive version for me. I got used to playing it instead of the arcade, so when I played the arcade it was slower than I was used to.

2600 Mario Bros. all the way!!!!

I've never played any other version than the 2600 version....same with Popeye. So I don't know what I'm missing from the arcade!!

I'm w/ Foxsolo2000. I always thought VCS MB was a poor translation, quite bare bones. I realize they had to "simplify" it, but SO MUCH is missing from it, its a shadow of its former self.

I go on about it elsewhere on the board here, check it out sometime.

No doubt it's missing some stuff but for a 2600 game quite good I would have to say.

7800 is of course much truer to the arcade

But the 2600 game is pretty good if you accept the limitations and don't expect a 100% arcade conversion

What's really missing?

You can't kill the fireballs and only one enemy is on a level at a time so you can't get the multiplier bonus for kicking a bunch off in a row

Other than that, all the enemies are there and the base game mechanic of flipping enemies and kicking them is there

There's even 2 player simultaneous mode

I think that the gameplay elements that were left out made a far more playable game than a flicker fest would have/

Well you just named a couple main elements that wrecked it for me ;) Of course I didnt expect a 100% arcade conv. If you "accept the limitations" isnt ANYTHING pretty good?

Just a few items off the top of my head:

The 2 plyr game relies on physics- bouncing off the other guy, punching him from below to mess him up, etc. Enemy physics are also a big part of gameplay IMO. The physics are nonexistent in the VCS version.

You cant stand on the POW switch which saved my life more than once.

There are actually 2 fireball types, the orange "patrol" one at the top & the green one(s) that shoots across the levels. VCS has 1 type.

& yeah, the "1 enemy per floor" thing...it's almost like a safety measure to keep it from getting too hectic/(fun?). MB really gets going when you have multiple creatures running around bumping into each other, which changes (& improves) the gameplay.

I guess that's why they made the fireballs so fast and indestructible. Otherwise you could just stand in one spot and pick off enemies infinitely. But those bastards make you RUN!

Sure it changes the dynamics of the game but I always thought it was fun and frantic enough to enjoy on its own merits

I agree. While I like certain aspects of the arcade better, I also like certain aspects of the VCS port better than the arcade, namely the speed and the fireballs. Good game, like I said.

Why would Nintendo release Mario Bros/Donkey Kong on the 7800? Never could figure this out. Atari must have had the rights in some sort of contract for a certain amount of years, I presume.

I think it had something to do with a lawsuit Atari had against Nintendo... There were so many... :ponder:

o.o' mario used to be Jump Man :)

i know lots of stuff haha.

If Atari held rights to mario could you imagine howmuch they would be worth?

even though it had the nintendo label atari would need a cut and he is known worldwide possible (from my knowledge is)

the most popular game character ever.

I think it is more to do with Atari acquiring the home distribution rights to those games before Nintendo entered the home market, and Atari simply exercising those rights to make 7800 ports. Note that Super Mario Brothers didn't make it to the 7800, nor did any other post-NES Nintendo game.

While I think the arcade version is better, 2600 Mario Brothers is pretty decent in its own right. The one-enemy-per-platform thing is almost a show-stopper, but the fireball change makes up for that in my humble opinion, and the changes to Slipice's behavior (you can kick a melting Slipice off, but if a platform gets frozen, it stays frozen for several levels) also help keep things interesting.

Actually the best home version I've seen is the Apple II port, believe it or not, and that one never even got an official release.

Edited for grammar.

My brother and I got it to scroll too. We grew up on the 5200 version, though, and that's one one I still play the most. We got it for Christmas, with the console.

If anyone is looking for a copy of Mario Bros. for the 2600 I have one available for sale/trade, cheep!

me and my ex played it in 2-player mode, score rolls back to zero after one million.

I rolled the score a time or two (I think you actually roll it around level 70 or so, but won't swear to that) I had a post about that a while back.

But in just three plays, 30k is damn impressive. I think back when I first got it and would barely beat 10k
