WTB: Atari 2600 Power supply, 2 controllers, cable and games.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’m a newbie about to buy a pre-modded A/V Atari 2600 to play with on my new 40” HDTV, and everyone I know of that offers pre-modded Atari’s generally offer just the console, without anything else.

So I am looking to see if anyone would sell me everything but the actual console to get me started.

I’m new to this, so I’ve been trying to figure out what I need. My understanding is that the bare minimum I will need is a power supply, 2 controllers (I plan to play with my wife), a cable to connect to the TV S-video (I’m not sure what kind of cable this would be), and a few random games to get us started.

If there were 2 paddles too, that would be awesome but not necessary.

Would that do it, or am I missing something?

I am hoping to be able to figure out a total of what the whole thing will cost and see if we can shoehorn it into our budget.

And of course if someone has a pre-modded console and the rest of the stuff (I’d consider a modded 7800 as a second choice), I’d be interested!

Technically speaking, the power supply is nothing special. I've found a few compatible units at thrift stores. I can dig up the specs for you if you want to go treasure hunting. Sounds like you are on a budget so this might be the way to go. I picked up an s-video cable for $1.50 at a thrift store recently.

While 2 joysticks would be the bare minimum and best bang for your buck, don't overlook the paddle controllers. Some pretty good games require those. Paddle controllers come in a set of 2 that are wired together and plug into just one port on the console. The Indy 500 game requires a special controller (Driving Controller) that works only with that game (not counting recent "homebrew" games).

A few games require a keypad type controller. There are several styles, all of which are functionally identical, though physically different. Pick one or two of those up for someday if you find them for a few bucks, but that'd be low on my list of priorities.

As far as games go, there's a place near me that sells them for 50 cents each. Maybe there's a similar "media exchange" place like that near you. You might get responses here from people willing to let go of their "duplicate commons" for around $1.00 each, maybe less.

Good luck.

PS - I loaned an unmodified 2600 "Junior" to a friend who plays it on his giganto LCD TV through the RF input. He says it's not bad.

atariguide sells new 2600 power supplies for $9.99 (shipping is free). Go to here: http://www.atariguide.com/store/products.htm

and scroll down until you see:

Brand New in Box 9v 500ma Power Supply for Atari 2600 Regular and Junior consoles (Six Switch, Four Switch, you name it). Does not fit Atari 5200, 7800, or 8 bit. Free Shipping! $9.99 (add to cart)

You could always find cheap, used joysticks on eBay as well as new ones, it just depends on what brand you want. Might as well stick with Atari, since it is the classic king. Same thing with paddles. Study the market for a bit and see what they tend to get auctioned for. Some people in the forums might have extra stuff to sell, too, so you might find a deal.

Most common games should run you 50 cents (Asteroids, Combat, Berzerk, Defender, Warlords, Breakout, and so on) to a dollar. Again, study the market to see what going rates are for things, as there is variation from item to item (both in auctions and from online vendors). Then you'll know what you might expect and what you'd feel comfortable paying.
