Making a 4k prom cart procedure! HELP!

Recommended Posts

There is a lot to do when making these. Does anyone have a more simple way to desolder and reinsert a prom!

I have two proms that I want mounted in a prom Guantlet and Malagai. I don't want to flub these babies up so

I need some friendly advice as to the most efficient way there is. :D

After practicing on about five Pac Man carts. I have realized that anyone who wants to do this must be freakin crazy. I am glad to say that after buying a DEsoldering gun, a one inch clamp, a little cardboard to put between the clamp, and about two tylenol three. I have Guantlet and Malagai from Answer Software in my collection to play. THANK GOD!! Pain in the ARCE!! I LOVE IT!! I GOT TWO GAMES THAT ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO AFFORD FOR THE POOR COLLECTOR LIKE ME!

It's only easy after you mess up a few times! All I can say is after you desolder the prom. Resolder it and see if it plays. Clamping it a little bit to make sure it makes contact with the board is the best advice I can give. CLAMPING IS THE KEY! If you ever have the opportunity like I did to get two PROMS that are so extremely rare. PRACTICE FIRST! Good luck with Eproms and EEproms.

My preferred technique is to bend out the pins of the 7404, and glue it upside-down to the back of the board. (after you cut the appropriate traces and solder the EPROM/socket first, of course) The +5 volts pin goes to the EPROM's +5 volts, one of the inverter pins goes straight to the chip select, and the other one gets a small wire to a via hole for A12.

This is a prom not an eprom that required 24 traces on a 4k pcb. Clamping seems to help when attaching these before soldering. I have in the past ruined proms that were hard to find. GUANTLET!! If you clamp the prom on the pcb with a 1 inch clamp before soldering, slightly clamping though, this ensures a good direct connection. If you decide to make your own carts someday I strongly suggest a desoldering gun if you use used PCB's! I have lost! I hope you don't!

Sorry, I didn't read the important part at the top where you said Gauntlet and Malagai. Yep, those two are pin-compatible. Just desolder the old board (get a hollow-tip desoldering iron from Radio Shack, tin the tip, then practice on a few Pac-Man boards until you get it right) and solder the new chip right on.

As for clamping, if you get one pin soldered in two opposite corners, it will hold down the chip just fine. If they need to be pushed down more, it's not too hard to do with your bare fingers while you reheat the joint. It's not like you're trying to make a hundred of them.
