Pixelboy #26 Posted September 23, 2007 (edited) I could never tolerate the SMS joypads for very long, except when playing Phantasy Star. The D-Pad was just awful! Edited September 23, 2007 by Pixelboy
Atarifever #27 Posted September 23, 2007 But when you played the games, there was clearly little, or no difference in them. And in many similar games, the SMS actually ran slower, had more flicker....crashed, all quiet a bit more than the nes. Then again, probably because of it's lack of popularity over all. Yeah they look the same: if you stomp on the Master System game and insert the broken pieces into the system. Master System versions of games look much better, especially in motion. Sure, when you play it on an emulator (whcih does nifty things like remove flicker, and increase speed) then that's absolutely true. Well...other than the "much" part of it. Hell, even the GameGear didn't look 'much' better than the NES, and it was running at least four times the colors (though I can't think of any games that look it. I'm talking real hardware, and no rosey glasses here. Me, use an emulator!? Surely you jest, sir. Of all the unintentional insults I have ever been handed, that one stabs most deeply. Using a SMS emulator... that's absurd. Who'd ever do such a thing? Puppy murderers and nazis I suppose.
Atarifever #28 Posted September 23, 2007 I've had the SMS since it came out and I've never had any gmes freeze on me......and never any flicker that I can remember. Psst Pressurecooker, over here. Yeah, I'll point this out just between you and me. NES fans, having spent their entire lives looking at a blinking screen because of faulty consoles, now have flickering burned into their retinas. They think everything flickers. Just let them believe it. They've suffered enough playing the NES already.

Foxsolo2000 #30 Posted September 23, 2007 The SMS was the first system I got after the 7800. Had to admit I was blown away by the graphics it offered and even when I upgraded to the MegaDrive I bought the converter so as to keep my SMS collection. I have to admit though that I preferred the MegaDrives controllers over the SMS's
BydoEmpire #31 Posted September 23, 2007 I still have never finished Golden Axe Warrior (and my save is STILL on the battery, after 12 years!), but pull it out every once in a while just to see if I can get any farther.Heh, I picked up Golden Axe Warrior a couple years ago, and got 4-5 dungeons into it. I've fought the skull with little fireballs circling it a couple of times but haven't been able to beat it. I came REALLY close, but I haven't picked it up in a long time. I really do need to go back and give it another go.

I need to get off my butt and get my PCB for an SMS converter board sent in for manufacturing one of these days. I wanna play SMS games on my Nomad and Laseractive. Classic Pac #33 Posted September 26, 2007 I got into the SMS sometime back and stayed there. The SMS had some really terrific games I rate Double Dragon, Rampage, Rastan, Ghost House and Wonderboy in Monsterland as my personal favs. I say it only failed due to licensing Nintendo had it, Sega didn't. ToToTEK already has a converter like that, and it can even play Japanese Mark III games.
jboypacman #35 Posted September 26, 2007 The SMS was a great system i had a bunch of games for it at one time but i just didnt play it as much as i should and sold off my collection a few years back.
Inky #36 Posted September 27, 2007 Just started playing Golden Axe Warrior... WOW! It out Zeldas Zelda!
mos6507 #37 Posted September 27, 2007 A lot of the SMS games play like jerkier versions of Genesis games. So once the Genesis came out it was hard to justify sticking with the SMS. Kind of like if you had a 7800 would you want to play the 7800 version of Desert Falcon or the 2600 version? However, there were some titles that never made the transition. Rastan on the SMS is better than the lame Rastan Saga II game on the Genesis.
PressureCooker2600 #38 Posted September 27, 2007 I liked the SMS Shinobi more than the Genesis Shinobi sequels. The Genny Shinobis are good but not great, IMO. It was the best port of the arcade version, too.
Pixelboy #39 Posted September 27, 2007 Just started playing Golden Axe Warrior... WOW! It out Zeldas Zelda! Does it? I tried it under emulation a couple of years ago, and the game had this very "generic vibe" to it that diminished its charm, and I didn't really get into it. I love 2D Zeldas, so perhaps I should put Golden Axe Warrior on my must-play-later list... I should also give Golvellius another chance...
Video #40 Posted September 27, 2007 I personally loved that the Sonic series is on there. Though it's a little slower and jerkier than the GG versions. (probably cause it's escentually the same hardware running a higher res screen) Oh, and for years, I played Populous on my GameGear via Master gear converter (why was this awesome game never ported to a handheld? maybe the old ones couldn't handle it, GG obviously could have, but no others?) Lemmings was also in my GameGear a lot too, just cause I didn't know about the AwEsOmE Lynx version untill just a few years back. (and have never seen the original DMG one, but if the GBC version is anything to go on, it would suck) Only 20 lemmings, but eh...it was handheld lemmings...sorta. (though that game was pretty ahrd to see, since the sprites were small to begin with) Seems all the really great games (that I was interested in) were never released in the US Heck, some of them were never released for the Genesis in the US for that matter (and some not at all) Maybe I would havve had more love for it, if it had done better and we had gotten the games here, instead of haveing to find them by (non ebay) UBB versions of the internet. People may diss Ebay, but it's a wetdream to all of us who wanted to like stuff like this, but never had access to the right games.
2600Lives #41 Posted September 28, 2007 Golden Axe Warrior is really damn good. It starts off feeling kind of "generic", but once you get into it, there's an actual story and, get this, townspeople who actually TALK to you! Overall, I'd say Zelda wins out in the gameplay department, but GAW has it's own charms that make it unique.
Uzumaki #42 Posted September 30, 2007 Yep GAW is a fun game to play if you don't mind Zelda clone. The game however is very unlike Golden Axe series though. I loved my SMS and I can understand why it didn't do well. Nintendo had more 3rd party games, Nintendo had more games, and Nintendo had more ad than SMS did. It's a shame though. Sega 3D games blows NES away. The Sega Light gun were far superior to NES zapper with a lot less flash, no "broken" sounding spring when you pull the trigger, and some games if you did a side by side (like Double Dragon), you'd go with SMS. Giltygear #43 Posted September 30, 2007 i remember having one of these back in the day, and i thought it was awesome that "hang on" was built in
7800Lover #44 Posted September 30, 2007 The SMS was a neat system. I remember a friend in Saddle Brook, NJ used to have one which I had fun on playing games like Alex Kidd and Safari Hunt. Basically it's the games that make or break the system. Nintendo's monopolistic practices prevented little 3rd party developers from making SMS games. A2600 #45 Posted September 30, 2007 Now would the SMS Power Base Converter for the Genesis be able to play American and Euro games too?? or just American SMS games?

It was the best port of the arcade version, too. I totally agree. SMS Shinobi holds up very well to this day I kind of agree. I think the SMS Shinobi is one of the best 8-bit games ever. However, I also think that Revenge on the Genesis is one of the greatest 16-bit games of all time.
PressureCooker2600 #48 Posted September 30, 2007 I still love the levels, enemies, and bosses of SMS Shinobi. The music was catchy, too. Masked Ninja was a bitch. I've only beaten him a handful of times.
Gentlegamer #49 Posted October 1, 2007 The best port of the arcade Shinobi was on the PC Engine.
ozatariprincess #50 Posted October 3, 2007 I had both systems when I was young. But I think the SMS was better because it has so many cool memories for me.
