post-14567-1190947224_thumb.jpgI just got this six switch 2600 and was wondering if it was a heavy or light. I'm no expert like the rest of you so I'll let you decide. The guy I got it from said it was NTSC but when I hooked it up I noticed the colors were different and then when I opened it their was a sticker that said PAL on it. Edited by theking21083

Yes, that's (obviously) a PAL system...
I don't know about "obviously", other than the "PAL" label. Looks like about any other sixer I've seen, in this view. I would be able to tell for sure if the armor was off. I thought that all PAL units were without the channel switch, though.

It says on the sticker on the back it was manufactured in Hong Kong so I'm guessing that would make it a light. The serial # is 568127661.
Location of manufacture has nothing to do with "Heavy" or "Light" (contrary to what you may read elsewhere on AA). It's all in the casting of the case bottom. This one is obviously a Light bottom since it lacks the supports for speakers (which were deleted before production began, in favor of piping the sound into the TV to reduce the manufacturing cost). Most of us have an easier time telling them apart with an outside, assembled view from the front or front/above. Edited by A.J. Franzman

Once you look at an actual "heavy" case in person, the difference is very obvious. Now that you know what a "light" one looks like, you'll probably be able to spot the other version at a glance when you see it.

yeah now I can see the difference. I looked at a picture online and since I know what to look for I can tell easy.

[...] I thought that all PAL units were without the channel switch, though.

Only PAL-I systems lack the channel select switch. These consoles sometimes have a "U" (for U.K.) after the model number on the sticker and they only output on channel UHF 36. The switch is present on PAL-B units ("P" after the model number) which use VHF.

This is an extract from a PAL Atari 2600 "Junior" manual:

All genuine PAL h6er should lack the switch, since they were only available in UK.
