Blackjack #1 Posted September 28, 2007 (edited) ***Warning*** This is an exercise for the bored or unemployed (or both like me). If someone wanted you to recommend 10 games for a particular console that they could play each one for about 20 to 30 minutes to give them a good overview of the system, what would those 10 games be. They should be easy to jump into (not much manual reading) and understand, and together give the person a good idea of the systems capabilities as well as be a lot of fun. 2600 through Snes generation. Homebrews are legal. Atari 2600 Atari 5200 Atari 7800 Intellivision Colecovision Sega Master Sega Genesis NES SNES Turbo Grafx 16 Odyssey 2 but by all means, if you would like to recommend for any other system, go right ahead! I only really have played enough to recommend for the 2600 myself. Yar's Revenge Seaquest Frostbite Star Fire (homebrew) Berzerk Missile Command Solaris Pitfall Asteroids Warlords Not only am I curious, I do actually intend on playing (emulation) all those recommended. So if you got nothin better to do..... have at it. Edited September 29, 2007 by Blackjack
Atarifever #2 Posted September 28, 2007 (edited) Atari 7800: Dig Dug Donkey Kong Jr. Food Fight Asteroids Midnight Mutants Possible Mission Tower Toppler PacMan Collection Beef Drop Klax Dig Dug could just as easily be replaced by Joust to make the same point. Blackjack #5 Posted September 29, 2007 The O2 really didn't have 10 worthwhile games, did it?
Atarifever #6 Posted September 29, 2007 The O2 really didn't have 10 worthwhile games, did it? Oh yes it did. If you're just using emulation, I suggest at least starting with Kill the Attacking Aliens, K.C.'s Crazy Chase, K.C. Munchkin, and Pick Axe Pete. Then move on to Turtles and any homebrews. A Sprite #7 Posted September 29, 2007 (edited) It's amazing how much you can get done by simply pretending to be busy... NES - 1. Super Mario Bros 3 - Because, sometimes the hype is not a lie. 2. Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania 3 - both have killed more lemmings than Walt Disney, but you only need one jump and slash at a time... 3. Gradius II - get used to the idea that many of the best games never left Japan. 4. Recca - because you really want to see what you NES can do, and don't mind that nobody needs that many sprites on the screen, at that speed, unless they're trying to win a bet. 5. Super Contra - ><V^ A, B good luck! Okay, now that the ADD crowd's gone, and gotten themselves chewed up by the meat grinder, the rest of you can go play Maniac Mansion. 6. Crystalis - This one's better than a lot of recent attempts to make an action RPG... 7. Ultima IV - Remember how Knights of the Old Republic (X-Box) made morality an exciting choice? Slackers. 8. Lunar Pool - puzzle game representation. Tetris should be on the gameboy list. Accept no substitutes. 9. Punch-Out - If you have to ask, play it now. 10. Metroid - Girl power. PressureCooker2600 #10 Posted September 29, 2007 1. Super Mario Bros 3 - Because, sometimes the hype is not a lie. 9. Punch-Out - If you have to ask, play it now. Two of the best games EVER!!!!!! You're right, sometimes the hype ISN'T a lie.
A Sprite #11 Posted September 30, 2007 (edited) Intellivision 1. Thunder Castle - Imagine a Pac-Man game where you shank the ghosts to advance. Add complications. 2. Shark! Shark! - Eat the weak. 3. Dracula - see above. 4. Diner - no, this time the food tries to kill you. Crush their rebellion! Eat their children! 5. Utopia - Aka funding a civil war while building your empire... 6. Atlantis - maybe this one has a happy ending. 7. Demon Attack - If you think about it, the leader of the demons is probably Satan. 8. Star Strike - Mattel's controversial ad promised the destruction of the Earth, sparking protests. 9. The M Network Sports games /or the D&D games - I refuse to be held responsible for any more games played on this evil system. You know which complicated numbers racket you prefer. Enjoy. 10. Beauty and the Beast - this one proves that no matter how bad the odds are, true love will always win out in the end. Unless a player sucks at the game. Intellivision - more evil than you realize.... Uzumaki #12 Posted September 30, 2007 (edited) Turbo Grafx 16 I agree with Apollo but I'd suggest a few different games instead: Neutopia and Neutopia II (if you like Zelda clones) Vasteel (sci-fi military strategy game, requires Turbo CD or Turbo Duo, won't work with Express) NES: no Zelda??? Shame!! Defiantly get Zelda for NES or the classc Zelda reissue for GBA GBA: Metroid Zero (original Metroid with upgraded SNES style graphics and huge new area) Zelda Minish Cap classic Zelda Advance Wars And now for my expert advice on top 10's Virtual Boy (yes there are more than 10 games) Galactic Pinball Wario World Red Alarm Virtual Fishing (Japanese only but fun!!) Mario Clash 3D Tetris (original tetris on steroid) Nester's Funky Bowling Vertical Force Panic Bomber Space Invader (Japenese only, very rare and highly desireable) If you have never seen Virtual Space Invader, I dug up a couple videos of it: http://view.break.com/374513 and http://view.break.com/374514 Sega Master System Space Harrier Shanghai Ultima IV (Europe release only, playable on USA console) Afterburner Double Dungeon (2 players YEAH!, strongly suggest rapid fire adapter to reduce thumb blisters) 3D Space Harrier (requires 3D glasses) Penguin Land (strategy game kind of like Lode Runner) Golden Axe Warriors Phantasy Star Sonic the Hedgehog (same as Game Gear version but easier to play on regular TV than a 3" blur-a-lot LCD) Edited September 30, 2007 by Uzumaki
Blackjack #13 Posted September 30, 2007 (edited) Some good choices being made here. I've been playing the heck out of a lot of these titles. I can't do virtual boy though. Edited September 30, 2007 by Blackjack
