What's the best of the 16-bit hockey games

Recommended Posts

Sega Genesis NHL '94 (EA Sports, if they were called that back then) probably has the biggest following. Personally I like the NHL '96-'98 series (also by EA, for Genesis) which all use more-or-less the same engine.

We bought the latest version every year, and then kept playing '98 - we're still playing it, in fact, but we really need to get into playing some of the fairly recent hacks so we'll have kind of up-to-date rosters, etc.

I never liked sports games, but my friends did. One of my friends was a hockey fan. One day he made me play NHLPA '93, and guess what? I actually LIKED it. It is still a fun game, I played it recently with another friend who is a hockey fan.

Also, it has fighting, which really adds to the fun. It is available for both the SNES and Genesis.

i 2nd that, but i think in the 94 version they removed the fighting, so NHLPA 93 is the last and bloodiest version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_series#NHLPA_Hockey_.2793

also the game gets faster and faster with each year from the first one to maybe NHL96, after that its not much of a difference in speed

i also liked Mario lemieux hockey because it was a side to side scrolling game instead of an up and down scroller like NHL hockey

also a thumbs up for Muntant League Hockey

i have 11 Hockey games for the Genesis 7 of them are the EA NHL Hockey's :D the others are Mutant League, Allstar Hockey, Mario lemieux, and Wayne Gretzky

Stay far away from NHL Stanley Cup for the SNES unless you dont get sick when the screen turns constantly when the puck switches players, and i dont like Hockey or sports games on the SNES because of the controller layout

For me, it's a toss-up between NHL Hockey and NHL Hockey '93...

Why NHL Hockey?

- Easy to start fights. I love the fights. :)

- The little "score a goal every time" trick in the bottom goal

Why NHL Hockey '93?

- More graphical tweaks -- players flip, players will literally reach out to block the puck from hitting the face, etc.

- More "features" -- blood on the ice, more organ songs...

- Cons: 1) too hard to start fights, and 2) the bottom goal trick is gone.

The first nhl on genesis. Played the crap outta that! Then again, that was the only 16-bit hockey game I ever played.

NHLPA Hockey 93 is one of my favorite hockey games of all time, and it is the version I play even though I have access to the newer hockey games on the SNES. The whole thing with the blood and fighting really add something to the game in my opinion.

I lean more towards NHL '93, because that was first one I played. But, both are very good. NHL '94 tried to add too much.

I prefer the Genesis versions to the SNES ones, because they seem to play a little faster.

Hi Guys:

Blades of Steel? Pfft...

No way José!! NES Ice Hockey, is "The Best There Is, The Best There Was, & The Best There Ever Will Be" Thanks Bret Hart for that Far-Out Quote.

Anthony....

P.S.: To bad Nintendo didn't continue with a Up-to-date title for Super NES.

NHL 93 was my fav. I still play it while my modern 3D hockey games sit idly on the shelf.
