justclaws
Hi again, Here you can find a very nice interview with Martin Brennan, one of the Flare developersMartin Brennan Interview there are also lots of other interesting things on this page like movies of unreleased Konix Games. That page is a SUPERB find, fascinating background information. It also brought back great memories and my comparative youth seeing Loki information again! Will you make it to €Jagfest this year perhaps or the Eurocon 2007 show perhaps? Cheers, JustClaws.

Math You
I think Martin Brennan's right about the future of video games: Quote Martin Brennan "You can then focus on book writers and artists for ground breaking content. The imagination will become the premium. I think it'll move completely away from technology into artistry."
Gorf
Good read for sure. The good thing is and I think the point of Mr. Brennan is that the tech will be so advanced that limitations are really only left to the limitations of your imagination and not how well you can code. The tools will be so good that being a programmer will be a benefit and not a requirement. I cant tell you how many times I wish I could just put on a helmet connected to a USB port that could read my mind and write the code for me. That would be the ultimate imagination machine. I know that' s pure fantasy but we can do alot better than we are right now. PS3 is a good example. The power under the hood of that thing is not well served by the current tools. Sound like another console we know? Once Sony gets that together(dont really follow so dont even know if they are doing better on this or not), I think you will see exactly what Mr. Brennan is talking about here. If they dont soon, someone else will do what they forgot to. Ironic...possibly falling victim to the way they beat the Jag and Atari back in the day...with dream tools! Todays tools for whatever machine are getting better but not anywhere near the pace of the hardware. I think everyone rely's too much on ports of tools. With these multi-core, multi theaded processors in todays machines, the compilers of today should be doing all the work of what code should be run on what chip. I dont think tech is the issue anymore but the ability to use that tech effectively. Once we close that gap imagination will certainly rule the day and I'll need to find a new line of work. carmel_andrews
I recently found out that one of the people behind flare one, namely Ben Cheese (as well as the konix/panther/jaguar design team) was also responsible for developing Argonault Software's 'Super FX' chip for Nintendo...according to Google's patent database
