Sega CDX no spin

Recommended Posts

Scored a Sega CDX system at a Garage sale today. I brought it home only to discover the cd doesnt spin. Anyone ever have this problem and know a solution?

I figured I would ask first, before I tear it open. I have enough consoles in shambles at the moment the way it is.

I need a little more information than that (if you can observe it, that is). The bad thing is that you'll probably need to take it apart just to provide enough information to diagnose the problem.

I don't have my CDX handy (it's about 3 hours away at the moment) but I have done a little repair on one before.

Is it registering that the door is closed? If so, can you press on the "door closed" switch and see if the eye appears to even be looking for the CD? If the eye appears to move up and down (watch out for that laser - wouldn't want you managing to damage your eyes) then it probably means that the eye is out of adjustment (or just plain burned out). If it doesn't even do that, then there are probably bigger issues.

You might also try to make sure that the spindle spins pretty easily. If it seems kinda stuck, then the issue is probably somewhere with that instead.

Long story short, CD drives suck to work on - and the CDX is a finicky beast at best (that doesn't like you to play with its insides). They aren't much fun to take apart, I can tell you that much. If you DO decide to disassemble it, don't lose any of the screws! :) The arm that keeps the lid open is affixed to the side of the case with a tiny screw that is easy to overlook when you're in a hurry to put it back together (especially when the previous person lost one of the little screws)

Good luck!

it does register that the lid is closed. The laser doesn't seem to do to much, but it does make a little sound. The spindle does move freely.

I did wind up taking it apart. What a pain in the ass. The inside was filthy, it looked like it was sitting in the garage for years. There was a bunch of hair and shit stuck on the rod that the laser glides on. I also moved the laser manually and it seemed like it may have been stuck, like some hair and grime clogged up the track. But, that may not be the case.

I can't really see anything physically wrong... Im gonna try and put some voltage on the motor and make sure the motor works.

I doubt that it is the spindle, but it is certainly worth a shot. I'm guessing that the eye is just out of adjustment or shot (being "out of adjustment" seems like the drive is usually close to being shot anyway) If you do try applying a voltage, make sure that it is no longer connected to the PCB - you never know what else you're applying voltage to otherwise.

So the CDX motor is just a two wire +5/12V and Gnd? At least it isn't like the stepper motor that (I'm fairly certain) the Gamecube uses (pain to troubleshoot one of those! :) )

Currently trying to trouble shoot a CDX. I think the motor might be out, but I have not tried loobing the motor. Would be curious if there was a source for those.
