Well, just got Oblivion...

Recommended Posts

Well, last week. Now I no longer have any free time. But some comments on the game.

first, is it just me, or is your diary set up a quiet a bit more clumsy than the one in Morrowind?

Second, The world seems to be really huge and expansive, but the problem I've found with it is...it's empty. I don't mean just towns, but everything. Morrowind, even the basic non GOTY edition had tons of caves to explore, and while you were probably just fighting the same two enemies all the time, you did have something to fight between towns. Oblivion, next to nothing. I've actually run into more fights in town, than I have going between towns. Something just not right aobut that.

Third...leveling up takes forever. And some stuff doesn't affect your attributes. Such as...I think jumping would increase your accrobat rateing, while on here, it seems to do nothing, or it's takeing so long, it seems like it's doing nothing.

Fourth, I like that they added a 'wait' feature, so you can wait till a certain time of day for a spacific event to happen, but I don't like that they removed 'sleep' meaning you have to find an inn or something just to level up. I mean, there shoulod be an option, maybe your dude doesnj't like laying on the ground or hwatever, but seriously, carry a bedroll or something (you mean you can cary 300 pounds of armor and weapons but not a 5 pound sleeping bag?)

fifth, I really like that the Computer players, townsflolks or whatever, actually do stuff. They will actually walk through doors on their own, you can evesdrop on conversations (though don't really gain any useful inside info or anything from it) and people will try to steal from you for a change. that's cool.

Over all, there are some good aspects to this game I really like, but over all, it also seems really shallow and poorly designed compared to the 6 year old morrowind. It's got great graphical detail (especially the vanishing point, which was my only complaint against morrowind) But other than that, it seems kind of a step backwards.

One question though,,,is there some kind of expansion comeing for this? Kinda like GOTY for morrowind...only better? Honestly, this is one fo the two games I bought my 360 for, and I find myself playing a 6 year old game more than this.

Anyhow,..thakn d fo rlsitinging to my rant.

There are lots of caves, forts, ruins, etc., to explore. They show up as various types of icons on your compass as you're walking around.

Jumping does indeed affect your acrobat rating; but once you start to increase that skill, it takes bigger jumps to have any appreciable effect on your acrobat rating (hence the reason why some characters will say things like "So-and-so is crazy, I swear she climbs up on top of such-and-such just so she can jump off" (i.e., the character being referred to is practicing on increasing her acrobatic skill).

If you listen long enough, sometimes they'll say things that can help clue you into stuff that's going on in other places, or they'll say things about certain other characters that give you hints about how to practice certain skills, or that give you hints about who to go see for training in a particular skill.

Is this a joke? LOL If not, then no...it's just you. The diary in Morrowind was ass compared to Oblivion.

That's for damn sure. Nothing like the old quest of 'pointlessly try to figure out what the F I was trying to accomplish last, and who I was supposed to talk to'

You must have missed it. There is already a GOTY version of Oblivion out that includes the "Knights of the Nine" and "Shivering Isles" expansion packs.

PS3 version is a little better looking, a little smooher framerate, less pop-up. A little buggier. Plus it comes with the "Knights of the Nine" expansion. I was never able to complete the Mages Guild missions due to a bug as well.

Cool (I just never saw it in the store or anything, ans I knew the PS2 version supposedly had some sort of expansions already in it, I was hopefull that it wasn't an XBL only thing, since I can't get that) I'll look for it, maybe just ask the dude that works here if they got..or are getting it.

So, I basically gotta fall farther for it to have the same effect then, that's good, I guess, as it seemed it took exactly the same ammount of time between level 99 and 100 as it did between 1 and 2 on the old game.

I guess I just got to far off the road for the forts and stuff, or just happen to take the wrong path ro something, as I've run into very few (Yeah, on morrowind, I know the eastern half of the island is pretty much empty, but the west side seemed there was some every other hill or something) Or maybe it's just lousy hit detection or something, as I know the Oblivion gates (which are pretty easy to see....for some reason :ponder: :P ) I've actually walked right up to some of those without it regestering I found one.

As for the diary...

Well, that's just it, the old diary...er...journal (since it's not manly to call it a diary for a dude) was set up just like a IRL one would be, in other words, one page, you posted things in order you did them in. The new one takes up at least 3 (and I still haven't figured out what the hell the fourth page is supposed to be) Which would be cool, if I could say...select the spacific d..journal entrys I wanted to highlight as my next 'to do' thing but other than the very base, you can't. or at least it looks like you can't.

For instance,,, right now I'm a vampire (goddamnit, that f(boop)ing sucks, I thougth you had to get bit, or fight a vampire or something like morrowind, but apparently it's a required element in this game) That's the page one quest I got selected right now, just cause I was trying to figure out if I could salvage the game or if I should just start a new one. The first submission I'm currently on is ' go visit...some witch dude' to get a potion or something. And the sub...sub mission is to get some kind of jewls or something? But since nobody will talk to me, I have no clue where to go (and can't buy them..obviously, as noone will talk to me) And the fourth sub sub sub mission thingy, or whatever the hell is...well...still blank (maybe it was just there to balance out the image or something, i don't know)

Of course...once I figure it out, maybe it'll be Ok, then I can pack up my whiteboard that I keep track of quests manually on. (that was how I did it on morrowind, for the stuff I really couldn' t rmember like names)

Oh yeah, one of my friends said "it don't look any better than the other game" and I was like "er....I think I'll leave now.." but thought about it, and I guess they are useing the exact same models for a lot of items, but eh...they were awesome to begin with, right? I think that's why the draw distance sucked so bad on the toher game. It's still got better bumplighting, and characture faces. I could have probably did without all the grass and stuff though, it's a neat effect to see in action, all those sprites working together to give a psudo 3D wheat field a neat look, but uh...everywhere?

One more thing...can anybody tell me what I could do on the vampire thing? I know, everybody loves it (I must just be wierd) and it's unlikely I can actually unvampire myself, since the last game had that so buggy it was almost impossible ( I don't really see that being fixed in this one) I know magis shops and mages guilds would have them, but as I said, people won't talk to me, if I could find the thieves guild, I could get lockpicks and just steel them I guess, but I never could get anybdoy to tell me anything there, except "er...it's a myth" I guess I never found the right person to bribe or presudade then.

Anyhow, cool game so far, thanks for any help.,

With mods Morrowind can look pretty fantastic.

http://www.huntsvegas.org/screenshots/Morr...eenShot%209.jpg

Those are taken in Linux.

As for Oblivion:

There are tons of caves, ruins, forts, etc. between towns. You should explore some more if you haven't found any. Just using the road between two towns you should find a few. Wander off the beaten path and you should be filling your map with places to check out. I have a notebook that I write down all the places I discover in and put check marks after I visit one just so I know what I haven't seen. In 400 hours of playing this game I have more unchecked then checked.

The quest log in Oblivion is very simple to manage. The second-to-last tab is uncompleted quests. The last tab is completed quests. Simply pick one of the quests and select it and that quests logs will be in the third-to-last tab. You can read back in the log on a per-quest basis. This is very similar to the quest log in Morrowind after Bethesda added the quest selection that would display quest names to filter your log with. This is something that didn't make it into the XBox GOTY version but is in the PC version. The same idea was used in Oblivion but it is even more fleshed out. Thank goodness this was done because the original log was an absolute pain.

When you eavesdrop on people talking you will sometimes get new quests added to your log based on what they are saying.

There are three ways to become a vampire: catch a disease when fighting vampires, ask a vampire to make you a vampire, or become a vampire through the "Vile Lair" addon. Once you catch the disease you have three days to either remove the disease with a potion/scroll or go to a chapel and pray. If you don't cure the disease you will become a vampire and the only two ways to get rid of it are through a long quest (start it by talking to people in a chapel) or through the "Vile Lair" addon. Once you cure vampirism you are immune to it. There are also different levels of vampirism but I won't go into all that.

I like both Morrowind and Oblivion equally. They both have their strong points. I think Morrowind has a more diverse environment and more content in the way of factions. I think Oblivion has a better combat system and more realistic interaction with NPC's. I also think that Oblivion is easier to get into and enjoy. Morrowind requires more micro-management and that can be a plus or minus depending on who you ask. In the end they are both unique games and very enjoyable.

Read up on how characters progress in Oblivion. You actually don't want to level up too fast. It is more important to increas your skills than level up as it also level up your enemies.

A new download that gives you a castle came out today over Xbox Live for free for a limited amount of time for those that weren't aware. Supposed to be the last of the downloadable content for Oblivion. :(

Another Oblivion question... has anyone played this on both the 360 and the PS3? What's the difference between the 2?

The difference is they both suck balls compaired to the PC version running on decent hardware.

don't fast travel everywhere you go if you want to find caves/ruins/etc. As there are tons of places to explore.

My main beef with the game is pretty much the justice system. I've found sometimes you accidentally steal stuff trying to click other stuff, and even though you put it down, you still go to jail or still are wanted. Also, do all the guards have ESP? I've stolen stuff or did stuff with no other people around, but yet, the guards still seem to know what I did.

But the first thing can be frustrating when you accidentally steal something, it can really ruin the experience.

Other than that, I loved Oblivion. Don't play it much anymore as the disc had a minor defect that has since turned into a major defect and now it's too old for me to return and it won't boot up anymore. At least i got to play about 30 some ours and beat the main quest.

I'll second this. That's really something they need to tweak next time. They should use a seperate button to steal or something. Its too easy to go up and talk to someone, only to realize you were sneaking and just tried to pick pocket them.

Yeah, I sorta didn't know I was a vampire till the fourth day when all of a sudden people wouldn't talk to me "aach, get away from me, you won't get my blood, etc" And by then, all my saves had already been infected or I saved while I was infected, so I couldn't undo it.

I did finely find out that if I suck peoples blood, I tunr normal for a little while, I just hope I don't end up with a shitload of vampires in another few levels because of it.

Got all my soulgems from the mages gild that way, now I gotta go kill more vampires, and shank some argonian dude (couldn't I use my own blood, since I'm argonian?)

But the first thing can be frustrating when you accidentally steal something, it can really ruin the experience.

I'll second this too, I mean,

first things first, if you jack something, unless someone's watchign you, how the hell do they know it's stolen? I doubt billy bob markes his shovels, or his socks with his name (and I don't intentionally steal thos items anyways) I could see a ring or necklace being engraved, but flawed rubys, or food? comeon.

Second...exactly how does the guard know you stole anything? Why is he digging through my shit anyways?.

One thing I like, They at least mark stuff as stolen on this game, so you don't have to figure it out like on morrowind. But if someone didn't catch you stealing it, I think it should be yours...

As for fast travel...how do I do that? They got rid of the stilt stryder thingys, yeah, there's the horse, but as it's not very offroadable, I don't use them, to bad they can't cary you rcrap or something useful, that would be awesome...or maybe you could get slaves to cary your crap, though I haven't seen any of those on this game, nor do I know you could use them on the last, even though you could supposedly buy them. That's something I always wanted to try, but never got to, as my computer crapped out on me about then..buying slaves I mean.

That's not a difference, that would be a similarity.

The difference is that sitting at a PC with over complicated keyboard controls instead of relaxing on your sofa in front of a 40" HDTV sucks balls.

Not to mention upgrading every time a new game comes out you want to play so that you have what that particular game considers "decent". It cost me $280 to play Guild Wars. $80 for the collector edition and then another $200 for a new video card. You know what sucks balls 'Shawn Sr? Paying Almost $300 to play one frickin game. LOL

To fast travel Video, just pull up your map and click to any location you have already visited. You'll have the option to fast travel there. Makes getting around much easier.

the game is very deep, things you wouldn't think of will happen. As for the Vampire thing. I've never played a game like Oblivion before, I never thought renting a room at the inn and then leaving the door open, a vampire would come feed on me and turn me into one.

I ruined my game once, luckily I save multiple times, there's like an outcast or "hidden" village. I murdered everyone in the village. EVERYONE, yet all the guards IN OTHER CITIES knew and I had some incredible bounty that I couldn't repay so i had to start again at a previous save. You can't pull anything passed guards that use ESP to determine if you've committed a crime. The justice thing in the game IS a major MAJOR flaw, but still it's a great game.

Open up your map and select an icon. The game will ask you if you want to travel there and if you do it will be instant to you. The game will actually determine how long it would take to go from your starting point to your end point and time will be adjusted accordingly when you arrive. You can only fast travel to places you have discovered (caves, forts, ruins, landmarks, etc.) or towns. You do not have to discover one of the main towns before you can fast travel to it.

Also, feeding on someone does not make them a vampire. As long as you don't get caught feeding on someone there won't be any consequences for it.

It's actually possible to kill someone without the guards knowing. You just have to have a high sneak level and do it (usually) in one hit.

Cool, I'll try that fast travle thing when I get home. There's one city to the very tip south of the map that I haven't been to yet (just cause it's kinda out of the way) so I may try to go there when I get home.

I got everything that I need, except garlic to get the vampire potion, turns out that's actually the hardest of anything to get, and I was thinking the vampire would be the hardest (and he took less damage than some of the wolves I've fought to kill him)

Didn't think of sleeping in the inns, but I always close the door (though untill I run into a charmed item to make it lock, not like that'll do much good) That might have been when it happened, and I remember that now. But maybe thought it was somethign else just because I had been to one of those huge alter things in a temple somewhere and it did somethign to me too.

Oh yeah, vampire dust is worth $250, if you have become one of the...er...vampire hunter guild members. I think it's funny they didn't try to kick my ass when I was scareing everybody, they were just like "woot...your normal....right?" but then again, half of them look like vampires anyways. (just not quiet as sick as I look when I'm fullvampire)

I may save a seperate file befor getting the anti vampire potion, just to try something new later...

Think I'll go shank randome people now...siezure later!.!.?.!.!

I used to buy a new PC every 3-4 years in the 90's only to get the latest and greatest in PC gaming... I've grown tired of playing that game... much more relaxing to buy a console and play games you know will run. PC gaming and I are pretty well done.

Thanks for the answers though... I'm still debating between the 2 consoles... who knows... perhaps my debating will last until the next price drop... lol.

Is it just me or is this not at all what happens in the game? I was turned into a vampire when i was fighting one and essentially failed the invisible "saving throw". The game's pretty deep, but nowhere near deep enough that you need to lock your doors or things will get you. Anything close to that cool is all scripted and triggered events.

Nah, But you're right, that would be cool and would give people a reason to lock their doors! Chances are Atari5200 got diseased while fighting a vamp, then went and rested. Once diseased, the first rest you take will trigger the beginning of your change. When you sleep you will have weird dreams and you will obtain some vampire skills.

as far as i'm aware I never fought a vampire. I did mostly the main quest when I was turned into one and this happened very early in the game as I did not know what I was doing. All i remember is one day waking up. Getting this weird script, and then going outside and the sun hurting me. If I did fight a vampire, there was nothing to distinguish it was a vampire, which is why I will always believe that it came in and fed on me while I was at an Inn because I know for fact I never shut any doors, i didn't think it was necessary.
