Bad words....

Recommended Posts

I'm the only one offended by all the S*** and F*** going around? I have been around this website for a long time, and I don't remember such words appearing so often.

You must not have been paying attention. I was away from AtariAge for a while and came back in 2003 and it seemed like every other post in the Off-Topic forum had the F word in it. Seems to be fewer F*cks than in 2003. Are they leaking out of the Off Topic forums now? Seemed like those words were pretty much kept out of the other forums.

Teens and adults know what F*ck and F*** means, so if that word offends you, you should be offended no matter how it is spelled. If I tell you to go F*** yourself in the a** with a rubber chicken, are you any less offended? We should either avoid using any forms of those words or learn not to be offended by a collections of letters. I'm going to create a new bad word right now. It's worse than F**K, S**T, C**T, C**K and every other 'bad word' you have ever been taught. Are you ready? Here it is:

Plornoopa

Trust me, that word is worse than any bad word you have ever seen. Are you offended? If not, what's wrong with you? You should be vomiting out of your mouth, nose, ears, anus, and penis right now. If that word has not sickened you to the point of death, then you, sir, sicken me! :D

There are certainly times when, to quote the Lord Chancellor (Iolanthe) "...I conceive you may use any language you choose to indulge in without impropriety". On the other hand, when certain words are used as punctuation, they are no longer effective in the situations where they would be appropriate. Gilbert and Sullivan's audiences were probably shocked when the captain who would "never use the big big D" in fact did so, but the effect would have been greatly diminished had the show been heavily laden with such language.

If nothing else, overuse of such language demonstrates a lack of writing skill on the part of the person using it.

There are many overused words and phrases that demonstrate a lack of writing skill. Some people are more offended by cliches.

I agree that some people rely on swearing a bit too much and I would like to see it toned down a bit. I rarely swear in online posts (especially here) even though I swear quite a bit verbally. I just don't think it's really necessary for the most part when posting on an online forum, although it personally does not offend me (and presumably not most people, as I have had very few complaints over the years about swearing). It is possible to enable "bad word filtering", which masks a list of swear words, but not sure how effective that really is.

My main concern is that many people visit AtariAge from work and/or school and those are two places where it would probably be best not to have rampant swearing visible. I think the best course of action is to ask those who do heavily use profanity to tone it down a bit.

Writting is nothing more then verbal speech in written form. Why would some words be ok to use for verbal speech but not written speech. Both are equaly open conversation between people. Whats good for one should be good for the other. Vice Versa, if something isn't acceptable for one, then it shouldn't be acceptable to the other.

My main concern is that many people visit AtariAge from work and/or school and those are two places where it would probably be best not to have rampant swearing visible.

But is that really "your" concern?

I mean, maybe I'm being unrealistic, but why are people at school and work browsing websites instead of studing or working? In many placed I've worked, that's forbidden to begin with on any level. And so what if it is allowed? It's not a porn's site problem that someone decides to browse nude pictures on their PSP in church on Sunday morning.

The site itself and how people act on it are your concern, but beyond that, it really falls on the end user to be responcible regarding what they do and where.

{gets into car accident browsing AA while driving, sues Al for damages} :ponder: :P

I don't need someone else helping protect me from myself and my actions. As an example of this mentality, Afterdawn. Where you are forbidden from publicly posting your own email address in messages. Their reason being they are protecting their users from spam from people who use web crawlers to gather e-mail addresses. Ya know, sure, I guess it sounds ok in theory, but in the end, it's not their problem and not their job to protect my email for me. Very few aprove of the policy, most bitch and complain. But they don't care what their users say/want. They are going to protect their users from themselves no matter what. Yeah, what ever. It's why I stopped visiting their forums. Not that I ever posted my e-mail or had any reason to, but the shear principle of the thing annoyed me and I wanted no part of their superior arrogance.

Verbal speech, unless recorded, is purely transitory. Words are spoken and they cease to exist. Anyone who didn't hear them the first time never will.

I would guess there are certain people in front of whom Albert would be unlikely to swear verbally. If he knows those people aren't around, he can know they'll never hear it. But if he puts such language in writing, he has no way of knowing who will read it.

Pssst, there are these things called tape recorders and other simmilar devices. They magicly capture spoken words carried by the wind to be replayed for anyone to hear at any time.

I would expect Albert probably watches his mouth when around such devices, or when speaking to people who would be likely to carry them.

Some states allow people to covertly tape record what people say to them and distribute such recordings; few states if any allow people to secretly make and distribute recordings of things not said to them.

True, but legality isn't the point on hand, nor revelant, since people tend to do whatever they want anyways, legal or not. So you can never really tell.

Besides, what about other more realistic things. I've had issues where my phone was in my pocket, and got dialed by accident, calling someone in my stored list, letting them hear everything going around around me without my knowing. I've even gotten a few calls like this. I had a 10 minute voice mail on my phone once from a friend who's phone dialed me when he sat down on it while he was at home playing video games. Taking to his girlfriend, taking to other friends, playing video games. "You have Halo, lets play that." After the first couple of minutes, I ended the playback and deleted it. Then he called me back a few days later and asked me if his phone had called me and apologizied.

But still, I had 10 minutes of recordered conversation that I didn't want of people who didn't know they were being recorded on my phone. Not even illegal since he technicaly called me and left the message.

It does happen. :P

When people are expecting their words to exist only for a fleeting instant, they speak somewhat differently from when they're expecting their words to be immortalized. True, one may sometimes find that one's words have been captured and immortalized unexpectedly, but that doesn't change the expectation that one's speech will be transient.

Bad language shows the writer's lack of culture (or education, or both) IMO

I don't know, there seems to be many highly educated people who use the F word in writing and speech. But forgetting that, many cultured, educated people are just as bad as the 'rude, crude and ignorant' people they think they are above. These paragons of virtue use the same unimaginative cutting remarks that 'cultured' people have been using for a long time. The less intelligent, lower classes are their playthings to abuse whenever the mood strikes. A truly cultured person wouldn't act snobby and say nasty things about others or hint at how much better they are than others. I believe that there are very few cultured people on the planet. The rest are pretentious, snobby, elitist, sanitized dung piles who might actually be worse than the lower classes they claim superiority over.

Back on the topic of bad words, there's good news! Now you can tell your boss to go screw himself and say that you were trying to boost morale and team spirit:

I'm not saying one shouldn't have such words in one's vocabulary. On the other hand, when a person uses such words more frequently than words like "is" or even "the", it does not say much for their language abilities.

I guess saying "f_ x" is more concise and emphatic than "x is bad", but it's not particularly insightful. Adding a few more "f_"s may seem to add emphasis, but not in any particularly useful fashion. More specific comments about why one finds x so disagreeable are apt to be much more meaningful.

I think cursing has been used and overused to the point that the words don't have the shock value they once held. I, too am a little bothered by seeing the cursing on forums. Personally, I think that if a person is actually taking the time to type out a curse word, they're only trying to make themself look bigger/cooler/more important than they really are. I can understand when someone gets upset and verbally fires off some some profanity "in the heat of the moment." It doesn't carry the same "passion" when it's typed out because by the time the post is actually posted, that "heat of the moment" has long since passed. As a result, I think it just makes the person who typed it look ignorant. It also removes a lot of the credibility of the opinion the author is trying to relay.

Profanity filters are nice and all, but as was mentioned earlier, everyone still knows what is actually being said. Just listen to any radio edit of songs that contain profanity. 95% of the listeners already know what is REALLY being said. ;) Those that take the time to work around a filter for the sake of being able to get a "naughty word" out is REALLY pathetic.

I, for one, would like to see the profanity go. Maybe a rule could be set in place where those that use profanity (directly, or indirectly) could lose privilages for a time. In other words, it wouldn't matter if they spelled the word correctly, or used **** This is only my opinion. Cheers!

If you use 'bad words', you are uneducated and uncultured, but also bigger, cooler, and more important? Wow! Bad words must be like smoking. Only uneducated people who don't know any better would do it, but it still somehow makes them look 'kewl' and 'all growed up'.

Sometimes I wonder if people who try to look bigger/cooler/more important by using big words are just as pathetic as people who try to look bigger/cooler/more important by using bad words:

Consequently, as you commence to pen your thoughts, ensure that whilst you undertake said campaign you are taking care to write in plain English, forsooth.

Big words used by a puffed-up snot bubble of a human being often offends me more than anything an uneducated person might say, but it seems most forums do not allow cursing and I'm not even allowed to use profanity on my own web site, so it might be best if 'bad words' were banned at AtariAge.

Random, I think we're in agreement here, but I did not say that using 'bad words' made a person cooler. I said using them was an attempt to make themselves LOOK cooler/bigger/more important. There is a difference. Also, I never said that using expletives meant that you were uneducated or uncultured. Am I cultured? Well, I grew up in the backwoods of Northern Maine. There was not much "culture" up there. Just lots of trees and potato fields, so I'd say had a pretty uncultured childhood. Do I consider myself educated? Well, I went to college and got a degree in Education. I've been an elementary school teacher for 15 years (hence my screen name.) So, I would consider myself to be educated. Do I use profanity in real life? Of course! I think most of us do, at some point. If I get caught up in the heat of the moment, I might let a few fly. However, I don't use profanity as a staple in my everyday interactions with people.

You used a great analogy with the smoking reference. Everyone (educated, uneducated, etc.) knows that smoking is bad for you. They knew it back when I was in high school, and that was 20 years ago. I think back to my high school days and I remember seeing kids who smoked. Why were they smoking? Mostly because they wanted to make themselves look cool, hip, groovy, phat, grown up, mature (insert trendy word here), etc. But in reality, were they? :ponder:

Now, I don't claim to be any kind of elitist, snob or "puffed-up snot bubble" (very creative, I like it.) I hope nobody thinks I am. I, personally, feel that my opinions would be given less credibility if I littered my post with expletive after expletive, so I don't use them. At the same time, if someone is expressing an opinion and their post is loaded with profanity, I don't take that post very seriously. I feel anyone can express their opinion in writing without the need to clutter it up with profanity, but again, that is only my opinion.

Nope, I don't think so. I was talking about people who overdo it on the big words just to look more important. I don't believe we have any of those people here at AtariAge. If we do, they're probably in the Latin forum saying things like this:

Atari games were and are, after all, totally kid friendly. For that reason, I like to think of the main boards as kid-friendly, and I personally try to keep things clean in the non-"members only" sections, and let loose more in the forums restricted to members.

The sad fact is that we have members of this forum who can't help but speak with S-and-F's. Not that I think that such a thing is truly what I would call "adult" in the manner of "mature". Personally, I would like to see an obscenity filter option available on this forum, rather than be forced to "ignore or put up with it" -- though it won't necessarily stop the more ingenuitive among the users of the obscene.

This kind of stuff coming from you is always hilarious. Try to read the following if Satan will let you:

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Christianity-Ch...help-please.htm

What I have tried to show you is that the games and programs of my time; Dungeons and Dragons, The Smurfs, and Masters of the Universe, all had one thing in common. They all had witches, wizards, magic, spells, and spirit possession. God is clear about what He thinks of these things. He doesn’t like them because they are from Satan. Have a look at the scripture to see how much dislikes these things:

Deuteronomy 12:29-31 (The Message)

29-31 When GOD, your God, cuts off the nations whose land you are invading, shoves them out of your way so that you displace them and settle in their land, be careful that you don't get curious about them after they've been destroyed before you. Don't get fascinated with their gods, thinking, "I wonder what it was like for them, worshiping their gods. I'd like to try that myself." Don't do this to GOD, your God. They commit every imaginable abomination with their gods. (Witchcraft, wizardry, talking to the dead, etc.) GOD hates it all with a passion. Why, they even set their children on fire as offerings to their gods!

John, Jesus loves you so much and He wants you to have the best He has to offer. Satan knows that and is trying everything He can to get people to do things that take them away from God. But Satan is clever. He doesn’t just go to people and tell them to leave God. They would see what he is trying to do straight away. This is what the Bible says about Satan:

1 Corinthians 11: 14b

…Even Satan tries to make himself look like an angel of light.

Satan will trick people into thinking that there is nothing wrong with something he has made by making it look soooo good. Like an “angel of light” He will do that by making it extremely fun. He makes the characters look harmless, and they are even on the ‘good’ side. The problem is that they are using Satan’s tools to fight evil. Tools like magic and wizardry.

It is all a trick to make people think that Satan’s ways are not that bad. I have looked at the guys who used to play Dungeons and Dragons when I was small. Today they are normal people. They are married and have kids, and those kids are playing with Digimon and Pokemon. Even though these games and programs have wizards and magic in them, those parents won’t stop their kids from playing and watching it. Why? Because their consciences don’t tell them that it is wrong since they used to play and watch things with magic, wizards, and spells in them when they were young.

Those kids will grow up and have children of their own and they will let their children play with spells, witches, and demons, without even thinking twice. Before long, every Christian in the world will be doing exactly what Satan wants them to do: hurting God by playing on Satan’s side of the fence.

That’s all that Satan wants to do. If he can hurt God, he can get Him back for kicking him out of Heaven. When my parents told me not to watch Masters of the Universe and The Smurfs, they weren’t doing it to be mean. They were helping me to love Jesus as much as I can. So now that I am older and understand more, I know that everything that I do should say “I love you Jesus!”, and that includes the programs I watch and games I play.

Were you able to read all of that without Satan pulling you away or clouding your mind? I doubt it, but just in case you were able to read it, are your eyes finally open? You can get all puffed up, prideful, and holier-than-thou, but your 'worshiping' of the Smurfs means that you are no better than a person who constantly says the F word. You might even be worse. At least they're not promoting the occult and leading people down a dark, satanic road. Things like wizards, magic, and spells might be fun and make you feel all tingly in your naughty places, but Christians who promote this stuff have no business acting like they are better or more mature than anyone else. Your anti-Christian obsession is obscene to Christians who are truly mature and have the discernment to see evil in disguise. The evil themes and practices in the Smurfs aren't even disguised, so you'd have to be pretty foolish and immature not to see them. In other words, if you can't see that you are being just as evil or possibly more evil than someone who curses, you can go Smurf yourself.
