Atari5200 #1 Posted October 23, 2007 Had to share my moment of stupidity with everybody, this is a good one. I got my HD tv about 3-4 months ago. Hooked up the 360 and life was good. The games looked great, and all was well. or so I thought. For some reason I decided to go through the setup options and went into display. yeah. 420p standard tv was the setting, so I changed it to 720p and again, life was good. EXCEPT, it wasn't outputting 720p. I played the Bioshock Demo and was like, damn this looks so much better...it didn't, it was still the standard 420p. The next day, i went in and checked the settings and it was at 420p, so i was thinking it just didn't save it. Then i actually noticed the picture of the switch on the av cable. Yeah. i never flipped the damn thing to HD TV, so all this time, i've had an HD tv but playing as standard tv. Now i'm playing in full HD and life is good, i can't believe i missed that part of the setup for the last 4 months.
NE146 #2 Posted October 23, 2007 This happens to a lot of people apparently as you're probably the 3rd post I've read like this in various forums over the past few months. As for myself, my 360 connectors all had a big white stickers on that switch that clearly said "HDTV" and "TV" on it so that was a big clue right off the bat. That being said, even though I got hdtv's, my 360 is mostly on "tv" for the most part since I prefer to play it on a tiny 13" screen via composite cables usually

Did your eyes pop out when you saw the games at the new resolution? Initially I hadn't been impressed with my 360, but when I got a HDTV the improvement was dramatic. Atari5200 #4 Posted October 23, 2007 yeah, it was a shock, and was the reason I was kicking myself in the ass because I could've been playing the games at this resolution for months now, normal setting on HD tv was a nice improvement alone, but actually seeing it in HD, it's amazing. Lord Helmet #5 Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) Congrats on finally figuring out that big ass sticker on the cable that is clearly marked TV and HDTV. I wonder how many support calls MS takes on this issue? Probably a ton. Edited October 23, 2007 by Lord Helmet
Atari5200 #6 Posted October 23, 2007 ok in all fairness, mine is not a sticker, it's molded into the plastic so it's the same color as the plastic, plus the fact I had my 360 for what, a year before I got my HDTV, so I never thought to look at the cable. MCHufnagel #7 Posted October 23, 2007 I avoided making myself look like a dumb ass by using the VGA cables to my HDTV. I just had to set the output resolution. Anyone there have a SDTV with component inputs. Does HDTV input work on your set? I know it would be down-res to 480i, but does the X360 even output HD res to the set? Shannon #8 Posted October 24, 2007 Component can display all the way up to 1080p. The only diff is component is analog and HDTV is digital. But honestly I couldn't tell the difference. HDTV cable does have the advantage of sending an audio signal as well though.
+remowilliams #9 Posted October 24, 2007 Component can display all the way up to 1080p. The only diff is component is analog and HDTV is digital. Component is analog, and HDMI/DVI are digital. 'HD' depends on the actual resolution, i.e. 720p or higher. But to your other point, I can't really see the difference between component and HDMI/DVI HD signals either. On the other hand, I can't really see how people say that they 'can't see a difference between composite/svideo and HD'. The difference is immense. Do people have their eyes closed or just have really sh*t TVs?

Do people have their eyes closed or just have really sh*t TVs? I can see an immense difference.. but it really isn't that big a deal. I still think hi-def at the moment is still overrated.. but I do think it's nice. I got three 50" plasmas, one in my living, one in my bonus, and one in the bedroom, so i can go to those anytime. And I often do.. like when I first got Halo 3 I took it out to see how nice it looked. After a few days I brought it back in to where I sit most of the time.. in my office using composite to connect to a 13" tv. Heck, it's fine. I'll say this.. to me the experience is the same. I actually prefer the smaller screen for the most part since I can see everything at once a lot easier Edited October 24, 2007 by NE146
Shannon #11 Posted October 24, 2007 Doi. Yeah I meant to say HDMI instead of HDTV. Anyways the only difference I've really noticed (personally) between hi-def and standard is a sharper picture and certain "colors" are alot easier to see/read. Also, although I've never researched it, I believe there is a larger range of brightness levels as well. Darker blacks, etc.
