The Best Way To Play PSOne Games?

Recommended Posts

For games almost everyone agree look like something a diseased lego threw up, PSOne games seem to get around - officially playable on PSX, PS2, PS3, and PSP. And then there are the unofficial ways of playing the discs you own...

The PSone may be the first system who's games play better on other platforms.

What is the best way to play the games? Are the graphical enhancements worth it to you, or do you prefer the original hardware to ensure 100% compatibility?

For those who don't play them, I'm curious: will this be the first generation of games since the dedicated pong systems to be thought of as almost completely disposable?

How do you get the graphical enhancements? Some old Playstation games that I own are much too blocky for me to take, so I quit trying to play them. It would be nice to at least get them up to PS2 standards.

The only way to get graphical enhancements (that I know of anyway) is to use an emulator that has a graphics plug-in that does it.

PS2 upconverts the graphics as well.

Since I don't own a single Sony game system, emulation is it for me. Although it's hard finding the games... But I'm not all that impressed with the games I've tried, so the PSX isn't high on my interest scale.

Ha, I forgot about that. it's been ages since I played a PSX game on my PS2. But does it upconvert it as well as those Tomb Raider shots?

The PS2 will turn the lego vomit look into a spray paint on a t-shirt look; it's kinda like the N64, if it had more texture memory and less vibrant colors.

The only change is to smooth solid textures; transparencies are still 8 bit looking. No changes to the native resolution, or full screen anti-aliasing.

BLEEM! is a better option for graphics, but compared to the other Sony systems and PC emulation has the worst compatibility...

The Tomb Raider game that I have still looks like crap on a PS2. Not anywhere near what we see in that picture.

If the PS2 doesn't do it for you, go for ePSXe; and good luck. Let me know how it works out for you... I haven't been able to run it on my computer, but based on people's random screenshots, it looks wonderful.

I have ePSXe, it's just that some games have graphical problems, like SaGa Frontier. I know I need a special graphics driver or something but I'm not sure which one.

I have used it. It's been a while though. I was so amazed at how nice a PSX game could actually look. The games look waaaaay better on a emulater than on real hardware.

The Best Way To Play PSOne Games

Not at all. N64 too.

Seconded. :) While there are a precious few gems on both systems (many of which are 2D, gasp), that whole console generation (Saturn too, Saturn fans!) makes me wonder why the push to 3D ever seemed like a good idea. I guess you have to appreciate the foresight on the part of console manufacturers, for their willingness to go through the "awkward haircut" stage of the video game timeline.

And no, this isn't just looking back after seeing the past two generations either. My first impression upon seeing the 3D games for these systems was that they looked like complete ass. I owned maybe five PS1 and 3 N64 games during the lifetime of those systems, due to an almost complete lack of interest.

I'm something of a purist. While I like the graphical enhancements, I like seeing the game in its original ass form. Maybe I'd be more interested in seeing them upconverted if I wasn't interested in playing so many games that are notoriously incompatible with the PS2.

Thanks. I like how some emulators are ready to go, except for maybe a bios. With Stella, all you need is Stella and the games and you're all set. Emulators like ePSXe that need 20 extra things to work besides the bios and the games seem like too much trouble. Try my wonderful free emulator, but first you'll have to go here and download this, then you'll need to go over there and download that, and remember to buy essence of bat anus from your local magic shop. Dump it all in a cauldron, mix it up, say the secret incantation and if Satan is in a good mood, you'll be able to play all of your favorite games.

I'll try it, but if there are too many flaming hoops to jump through, I'll just forget about it until somebody makes an emulator that is as easy to use as Stella.

I like to use the pSX emulator because of this. But the developer is a purist and it doesn't offer any graphical improvements to the games. :(

I don't remember having much trouble setting up ePSXe. The only thing you need to do is point it to the BIOS file.

Wow. That post is the exact one I was thinking I'd have to make in defense of my own. Well, except the Saturn part, but then, I guess I think the Saturn is better than the 64 and PS1 just because it's easier to find the non-trash on a system with fewer games overall. I mean, GunGriffan isn't exactly beautiful stuff either.

I always find when I say this sort of thing I also have to say:

And no, this isn't just looking back after seeing the past two generations either.

before the end of an argument, and from how you added it right away I assume you've experienced the same thing. It;s the ONLY generation I have ever

A) Disliked as it was occurring

B) Disliked after it was over

I didn't buy a system that whole generation because I was pretty sure it was complete crap. Then, my brother gave me a PS1 at the end of the generation, and I knew that I had been right about the PS1. Then, this past generation, I bought an N64. It was quickly apparent that I was right about it as well.

I have ePSXe and I had to spend some time tweaking the settings with each game so everything worked that I tried but there were still occasional glitches.

I hve one of the latest PS2s and it *seems* to work with the games I've tried but the graphics aren't as good as with ePSXe.

I still prefer regular PSX (or PSOne) over later consoles. While later consoles do offer graphic enhancement and faster load time, a few PSOne games aren't friendly in those modes. Plus those games still can't use newer memory card so it's kind of pointless using a big PS2 or PS3 to play PSX games in standard mode with old 15 block cards.

Beside I'm getting rid of PS2 anyway. PSOne and PSX is far smaller. And there's still plenty of games I do enjoy on PSX like Suikoden and Blaster Master. PS3 is a few years away at the soonest and that is assuming there's more than a few PS3 games that has decent replay value for me.

PS I've played PSOne games on PC using old emulator Emurayden and standard PSX discs.

Hey, it wasn't all that bad.

Resident Evil, Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo...there was a ton of games that were good for the PS1.

Tenchu was awesome too. The Namco gun series, Time Crisis and Point Blank were awesome.

Sure they lacked the graphical power but I would have definitely played a Playstation over a Super Nintendo. In the end, there's probably better games that originated on the PS1 than the PS2, IMO.

But I ended up selling it all a few years ago cause I just wasn't playing them. Had I known then I woulda bought a PS2 (after swearing off new consoles....lol) I woulda at least kept those pricey Namco guns I had.

But I've heard that the PS games don't play on a PS3...I could be wrong. The controllers aren't compatible, I don't think.

Why all the hate for the PSX? Nobody seemed to mind the graphics 10 years ago! Lots of cool games, Resident Evil series, Tomb Raider series (still the only TR games I play, I don't like PC versions), and the game that made me buy a PSX in the first place was Twisted Metal 2.

Are ALL PS1 games 100% compatible with PS2 and PS3? I don't like how the Xbox360 is "partially" backwards compatible. Big reason why I still haven't bought one. There is no good reason why more advanced hardware can't play older simpler games.

Why all the arguing, people? Again? This thread is about the best way to play PS1, not about whether you like it or not since, if you didn't like it, the solution is simple. Don't play it.

Aaaaanyway. I'm very intrigued by those emu. screengrabs. I don't run a Windows machine and I use an Xbox for emulation, though the PS1 emu on that doesn't do (I think) and of these fancy tricks. Well, as I've only used it to play Castlevania on, I'm probably wrong :)

How's the speed on these emulators? And what happens when you get to something bitmapped, like a cut scene, does your lovely hi-res polygon image crop down to a tiny mpeg window?
