Printer question

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to hook up a printer to my XEGS system w/disk drive, but can't get it to work. The printer works when connected directly to the XEGS, but not with the disk drive connected. I tried many different combinations of connecting the cables to different ports on the printer and disk drive, but nothing has worked so far. Does anyone know if there's a specific arrangement required? Thanks.

I think we need some more info. what make and model of printer? what model disk drive? Have you swaped the cables one at at time with just one device and the XEGS to make sure you don't have a bad SIO cable?

I'd like to know this one, too. But I'm using an 800XL with a 1025 printer and 1050 drive. Can't getthem to play well together.

Glad the boards are back up :)

Can't say what your problem might be, but way back when I used an 800XL with multiple 1050s and a 1027 and 1025 printers (not at the same time) without issues. ;)

It's a good idea to have a spare 8-bit for problems like this, so you can tell right away if the problem is the 8-bit or a SIO device.

I have an 800Xl, 1030, 2 1050s, a 1020, and a 1027 all connected together without any problems. With out a spare 8-bit, you need to start at the most basic level. I would test to make sure all the SIO cables are working correcly. Then I would check the devices again one at a time with just the computer hooked up. I would also re-solder all the SIO ports on all the devices. If all that checks out and multiple devices are still not working together, then I would have to think there may be a problem with the PIA chip in the 8-bit.

I'd make sure to try the disk drive using both sio jacks. I'd also test both sio cables.(4 tests total). Try using the shorter 3' cables.

If all works, I'd plug in the drive and printer, send a file to the printer while flexing the cables at the drive slowly.

As said in another post, may have to resolder the sio jack points, or start testing the computer replacing the pia. There could also be a situation where the drive is not correctly releasing the sio port.
