Best version of Tetris

Recommended Posts

Hiya there,

I'm sure that there will be many opinions on this, but what is your favorite version of tetris? I am looking for anything pre playstation so systems like Genesis, SNES, NES etc...

It's just that it's a game I never have gotten into, but everyone seems to love it. I want to give it a shot.

Any help? :)

Thanks

Sam

Are we counting variations?

Tetris Attack.

Otherwise, it depends on what you're looking for in a Tetris game. Purists cite the Tengen NES version, but it's obsolete. Two player competition can also be found on the SNES Tetris & Dr. Mario cart, along with advanced vs. cpu level play.

My favorite of the classic versions was a Tetris for a monochrome computer that simply added new pictures to the borders when you went up a level, so there was a reason to see what later levels had to offer. My second favorite is the original Gameboy version - the B type music track is an invitation to a dance.

As for the appeal, it seems to play best to those with a mind that can think several moves ahead of the piece in play - at it's most zen, you're guiding a stream of broken pieces into a unified whole, and it's either something that clicks with your personality, or it doesn't.

I'm partial to the NES version. My favorite is Tetris Max, an unofficial clone for the Mac (before Mac OS X). Great music and sound effects!

Thanks so far for the quick response. Yes, I am just looking for a basic version, will give the nintendo variations a shot and see how we go.

Thanks

Sam

The two classic Nintendo versions, for the NES and the Gameboy, are pretty good. Very straightforward, no weird options, no two-player, just basic Tetris. They have tight control, good music, and serviceable graphics.

The NES Tengen version is a different beast - it has loads of options, a two-player version, decent controls (though IMO not as good as the Nintendo versions'), and nice, though different, graphics. I've mostly played it with the sound turned off so I can't speak to the sound effects/music. The weirdest thing about it, to my mind, is that, unlike most other versions I've ever played, it pauses between levels when it adds bonus points. Most other versions I've played are much more endurance tests, with relentless action; no pauses between levels, just faster and faster and faster. The Tengen NES version has a little room to breathe. You might like that, or not.

I've owned Tetris DX for the GBC, Tetris Worlds for the GBA, and Tetris DS for the DS.

Tetris is Tetris. They're all pretty much the same. I think what distinguishes them from each other is the modes they include. And so far, I think my favorite mode is Sticky from Tetris Worlds... I only wish there was a Sticky mode in Tetris DS... :(

Tetris - for the original Game Boy - is arguably the best pack-in game ever. I think we have had "best pack-in game ever" threads before - it might be fun to start one up again.

I really love the gameboy Tetris, though the C64 version had really nice music.

Turns out Alexey Pajitnov's favourite version of his game was Tetris Zone. Can't say I've played it.

Anyway, there's a really good interview with him HERE.

My favorite is the original monochrome Tetris on the Gameboy linked up with a friend. If you don't mind computer versions, Tetrinet is also great. Sega Tetris on the Dreamcast is pretty decent. If I remember correctly, Tetris Plus 1 & 2 (Arcade) are also pretty good for the puzzle mode.

Tengen Tetris is the best of any home console version excluding PC software. Emulated or actuial arcade machine, Atari Tetris is good.

I think the mono gameboy Tetris was the one, with great controls and clear simple graphics. I remember when a friend also got a Gameboy a few months after I got mine and we played two player Tetris a fair bit. What bugged me was that the last time I played him, (I seem to remember that it was best-of-seven on the gameboy) I was 3-0 up and he came back to win 4-3. I hate losing like that! :D It's sad for so many reasons that I won't be able to have a rematch...
