SIO2USB is here!

Recommended Posts

Ok,

My SIO2USB unit arrived yesterday and I loaded a few ATRs on it for testing.

I committed to this thing awhile back and during the wait things changed like the Euro which prob wouldve kept me from buying this, but having said that the Unit looks great and the box has a very 80's feeling to it :)

I put a few atrs like DROL and Ultima II on the unit with and without a directory.

I plugged the unit into my upgraded 130XE (320K ram, 32n1 OS, MyIDE internal - classics has made a fortune here :D ) and the screen lit up blue!

The navigation is a bit clunky and the display doesnt have alot of chars so you will want to make sure your atr names are not long

I was able to navigate the root and directories so you will ba able to manage your files according to your own style

I was able to switch OS from 130XE Rev C to 800 OS B and the unit had not trouble - Drol and Ultima II ran fine - disk swapping for U2 and saving worked like a champ!

This is a really neat unit - only real drawback is navigating if you have alot of atr's you want loaded - but otherwise works well.

I have 1 reqest that I am not sure is possible or not - it would be great if you could 'mount' a directory as a drive so you can put .xex's in it to play from. This would reduce the need to swap alot of .atrs in and out for some things.

Great job guys!

Technically, it is possible. I'll forward your request to Thomas Grasel, the Firmware developer.

I read so many things like that... but WHY aren't you using a 16MB ATR loaded with ALL those XEX or other binaries? I'm almost never using another ATR.... always the same "16MB-1.ATR" loaded with games (and demos).

It boots with a binary loader. All games are sorted like "arcade" "shoop'm'up" "walk and jump" etc.

You really should consider to try that.

Good luck

Marius

Hi Guys

The SIO2USB is a really nice thing. But sometimes i have a small problem. When mounting an ATR,i want to swar this ATR to another disk and it does not work.I tried this with the "Another World demo" and "Goldhunter".I mount the file, but if i want to swap it to disk 1,nothing happens. :(

Maybe anyone can help.I use a normal Atari 800 XL and the Disk 1 was empty, when i wanted to swap the file to it.

greetings Walter

Well,

why not ask the developers ?!? Afaik it is possible to swap two drives / two ATR images... but err, do not know if it is possible to swap an ATR (eg. mounted as D2:) with an "empty" drive or a real Atari drive... and err afaik the SIO2USB supports only ATR images, no XFD images, no *.XEX/*.COM files... Since you speak german and the developers also, it might be much easier to ask them in your own language... -Andreas Koch.

Awhile back I started to do this to fill out my MyIDE, however with 64 file folder limitations and eratic mass copying I gave up - care to share you 16mb images with us :)
