It's all nostalgia for me. Playing Gran Turismo with the Garbage soundtrack is fun, the original Wipeout is still a blast, I enjoy the occasional Bushido Blade deathmatch. Parappa always entertains. These are about the only games I still enjoy, but I'm sure others have games they like that aren't available on other platforms. And it's nice that the PS2 is backward compatible--I gave away my original PS1 when I moved. And as far as the PS2 is concerned, I am currently working my way through FF X, which shows you how up-to-date I am...

 

Then again, once I get my hands on Wii Guitar Hero I might as well just sell everything else.

Here's a list attached with all PSX games ranked that have at least 3 reviews. Only 948 games meet that condition.

If you really wanted to get fancy I suppose you could apply some statistics-fu on this. You could calculate something like a 90% confidence interval for what each game's popularity would be, if the entire population (every gamer) were to have voted on it. I think Excel can do stuff like that. A game with a sample size of only 1 review would end up with a pretty useless result, like "90% chance that the real popularity lies somewhere between 5% and 100%". You could then rank by the mean of the resulting intervals. Doing something like this, a game with more reviews would tend to beat out games with only a few, which is fair since having more reviews implies more popularity.

Actually, that calculation won't really change anything, since for the vast majority of your confidence intervals they will be symmetrical around the original value. What you want to do instead is regress each value towards the hypothetical average score of every game.

Since I'm a nerd, too, I did some simple regression calcs on the 2nd list Cybergoth posted, the zipped one that has only games with at least 3 reviews.

 

It's kinda weird... - some interesting questions arise, like: What is the hypothetical average score? You might say 50%, which I would tend to agree with. On the other hand, as you might have anticipated, reviewers are heavily tilted towards the top; the average score of the 948 games is 71.5%

 

And my impression, though I haven't tested this, is that the distribution of review scores is almost the opposite of a normal (bell) curve, with heavy clustering down at the 1-3 range as well as in the 7-10 range, with the fewest scores in the 4-6 range.

 

But anyway, here's a file with a regressed score for those 948 games. And here're the top 20, with actual score and regressed score:

Are you sure Acclaim released Thunder Force V? That's by Working Designs. Pretty sure they didnt release Res Evil Survivor or 5th Element either.

 

Also, Acclaim released Riven- not on that list. Are you sure that's a list of Acclaim titles?

No, I'm not sure. It's just the list from gamerankings.com that Manuel supplied and I've been playing with for a few days.

After looking around, looks like you're right: Fifth Element looks like Activision, Thunder Force V looks like Working Designs, Resident Evil: Survivor looks like Capcom. So take the publisher data with a big grain of salt, I suppose. And Riven is in there as an Activision title but, you're right, it's an Acclaim title. So either there are a bunch of errors in the gamerankings.com database (not too surprising if true) or I goofed up the data while playing with it (also not too surprising ).

I think it's the later unfortunately, since in the lists the credits seem to be fine.
