Gregory DG #1 Posted November 14, 2007 I have an R4 now and it's awesome. I love playing Genesis and SNES games on it too. Also, I see there are some Atari themes over at http://www.ndsthemes.com/ I wonder who created those?
Jess Ragan #2 Posted November 14, 2007 I've got a SuperCard, myself. It doesn't play Game Boy Advance games as well as I'd like but it handles DS games pretty well. Just one question for you, man. How are you able to love playing Genesis and Super NES games on the Nintendo DS? The last time I tried a Super NES emulator it was flawed at best, and I can't imagine Genny emulation on the DS being much better. Which emulators are you running? About how fast are the games? mimo #3 Posted November 14, 2007 Yep I got an R4 and an E-Z-5 3in1 so I can play GBA games, rumble pack and use Opera Browser The PokeyDS is looking good, and hope they can get the speed up. ColecoDS is fantastic and full speed Tried FrodoDS but it is a PITA and I cant get it running propely Not tried Genesis or SNES (to any great extent anyway) how do they play? what is the speed like,
n8littlefield #4 Posted November 14, 2007 I've got an R4 and absolutely love it. I'm pleased to hear that ColecoDS is ful speed - I'll have to download it today. The best Genesis emu is pretty much full speed but with no sound. The SNES one is coming along nicely, but compatibility is a bit more limited and it has issues with figuring out which layer goes on top.
Gregory DG #5 Posted November 14, 2007 (edited) jEnesis and SNEmulDS are very good so far. jEnesis lacks sound, but is very graphically accurate. SNEmulDS has sound, but has a few graphical glitches. Hey, I can still play Super Punch Out pretty good. And Street Fighter II & Streets of Rage on the Genesis emulator work pretty darn good. Speed is nearly perfect for both too. NE146 #6 Posted November 14, 2007 If you're gonna play handheld emus, the DS is definitely not the way to go. I mean they're novel, but that's about it. Best pop them on your PSP or GP2x if you got one
joeybastard #7 Posted November 14, 2007 I have a Max Media Dock. I have a bunch of homebrews on it, a few albums of mp3s and a couple of emulators. The emus for the VCS is decent, the Colecovision one is very good and the SMS one is pretty good too. The sound isn't perfect on any of them but I never play with sound any more anyway. NE146 is right, if you want a handheld mostly for EMUs, the DS isn't the best choice. I only picked up the MMD dock because I got it very cheap at a Walmart clearance. If it was full price, I wouldn't have bothered to buy it. When the PSP hits $99 or less, I'll probably snag one for emus. Outside of it's retro comps, most of it's library doesn't interest me so I can't justify it's price for me right now.
mimo #8 Posted November 14, 2007 I had a GP2X and got rid of it because the thumbstick is shite IMO, I don't want a PSP as the games for the system don't interest me in the main, and I dont want to run the risk of bricking one just to use emulators. For me the DS is ideal, I can run a couple of decent emulators and play the excellent range of DS and GBA games, which include some good Arcade collections anyway ( which is what I like to play in the main). I can close it up and put it in my pocket without carrying a case to put it in. I can play a 10 minute game in my break at work.

Best pop them on your PSP or GP2x if you got one I'll have to agree with that but I haven't touched my DS flash card setup in over a year so I might be out of touch I had a gbadvance 256mb flash card from a few years ago, when the DS first came out I got a pass key (not sure of the brand or the real name) but it worked for most of the emulators and hacks out there at the time. Gregory DG #10 Posted November 15, 2007 If all you have is a DS (like me) then a $30 R4 with a bunch of emulators loaded is awesome. In addition to the SNES and Genesis emulators, the NES emulator is top notch!
n8littlefield #11 Posted November 15, 2007 I actually prefer the DS for emulation - Sony keeps making it tougher and tougher to use a system for both emulation and current commercial games and the GP2x is nice but has no real commercial support and lacks a built in battery. It's not as compatible as they are (yet) but it's making great strides.
Ze_ro #12 Posted November 15, 2007 I have an M3, which works quite nicely... though I haven't even tried using any of the emulators yet, as my GP2X does all that stuff quite nicely. --Zero
+remowilliams #13 Posted November 15, 2007 I've got an R4, and also a GP2X and PSP. The DS emulators are way behind the other two platforms.
Gregory DG #14 Posted November 15, 2007 The DS emulators are way behind the other two platforms. No doubt. But they're catching up quickly... Have you seen QuakeDS?
Tickled_Pink #15 Posted November 15, 2007 Haven't got one yet, but looking ... Even Amazon are selling 'em.
mimo #16 Posted November 15, 2007 Haven't got one yet, but looking ... Even Amazon are selling 'em. Yep, but dealextreme are the cheapest I think, get one and play all your favorite girly DS games
norkusa #17 Posted November 15, 2007 I bought my R4 over the summer from Dealextreme and love it (only $31 shipped!). Unlike the PSP, it's soooooo easy to update the firmware on the R4 and loading games is a snap. I agree with NE1 though, the PSP is the best way to go for homebrew although it looks like the DS is starting to catch up.
Jess Ragan #18 Posted November 15, 2007 I get the feeling that I should be updating my flash cartridge. The one I've got won't run all software, and forces you to reformat files before they'll work properly.
Tickled_Pink #19 Posted November 15, 2007 Haven't got one yet, but looking ... Even Amazon are selling 'em. Yep, but dealextreme are the cheapest I think, get one and play all your favorite girly DS games Ah. But it aint for me. The girls have one each. That's what I'm trying desperately to point out to my other half, anyway.
Ze_ro #20 Posted November 16, 2007 The DS emulators are way behind the other two platforms. No doubt. But they're catching up quickly... Have you seen QuakeDS? Of course, QuakeDS isn't an emulator... The main drawback of the DS when it comes to emulators is the rather limited amount of RAM in the system. The GP2X has 64MB of RAM and the PSP has 32MB of RAM (64MB on the new slim one)... but the DS has only 4MB... this is a really significant difference when you have to try to fit both the emulator program itself in memory along with the ROM image of the game you're playing. --Zero
Jess Ragan #21 Posted November 16, 2007 Would the memory cartridge included with the DS Internet browser make any difference? That's an extra ten megs right there.

That plays pretty much everything still as long as you update the firmware and patcher software.
Miqorz #23 Posted November 26, 2007 I actually got my DS after seeing the horrid shit that can come of trying to get emulators on a PSP.. possibly bricking it for life? No thanks! Plus.. I like Nintendo more anyways. I'm not a HUGE emulator person so the only systems I'm interested in are SNES and NES, and I've heard the emulation on those two systems on the DS is almost perfect.. I'll be buying an R4 when I'm out of this woods with the current courses I'm taking at college..
Joe Stella #24 Posted November 26, 2007 R4 and 3-in-1 also from dealextreme. highly recommended for homebrew/emulator/mp3/video fans. does anyone use a memory card larger than 2gb?
mimo #25 Posted November 26, 2007 (edited) I had a 4 gig one in my R4 for a while, but it became a problem finding stuff, so I have gone back to 2 X 2 gig ones Dealextreme, free shipping from Hong Kong, I have no idea how they do this stuff so cheap. The new R4 I got from them last week is a different design, the microSD card just slots in now, no clicky catch thing that broke too easy Edited November 26, 2007 by mimo
